The Jets played host to the strong UNSW/ES Bulldogs at NorWest Christian College at Riverstone on the weekend, fielding a good mix of youth, experience and new players to the game. Played over 6 22 minute periods in fine but warm conditions, the pace was frenetic and the skill level was high, but most of all, the fitness level of those who have been slogging it out since November was astounding, with great endurance and incredible recovery on display, showing that the Jets will take some beating this year.
Although no scores were kept for the day, a well balanced, even contest was the result, played in good spirit, despite the fact that it was both teams first opportunity to get their hands on a footy in real match conditions.
Standouts for the day were Elmo, who showed tremendous fitness and an awesome vertical leap, to best his opposing, more experienced ruckmen on more than his share of occasions. Stewart Pottsy Potts and new recruit Mick Cranky Craigie were proving to be headaches for the Dogs defence, with strong leads and kicking 12 goals between them. Nick General Milkins was in scintillating form in the middle, ably supported by the returning Aaron Snowy Clayden, who was in sublime touch, whether on the ball or up forward. Matt Oyster Brophy and Norm Guns Hanley held the backline together with some good communication, while Owen Dildo Butcher, Jake Apricots Berry and Adam Foxy Fox were burning up the track. Worthy of extra praise was the gutsy effort of 15 year old Josh Bondi Cass, who showed composure and maturity that belies his youth, throwing himself into packs with no fear for his own safety, providing some surley anxious moments for his father Les, who also played some good footy at the ripe age of 53. Bondi is a player to watch in future, whether in Jets colours, at affiliate club East Coast, or in a higher level altogther.
Mat Lozza Laurence, Stephen China Chase, Sam Sammy Tanuku and Jack Pedro Wilson in his first ever game worked well in the twos squad and will push hard for Senior selection during the year, along with a cast of others.
No major injuries and some good play sets us up for next weeks trial against a much stronger Macquarie Uni squad, played at University Oval next sunday 15th from 1pm for Reserves and 3pm for Seniors. See Pekay or Benny during the week to put your name down, all players required.
