St George 9.13 (67) def North Shore 8.12 (60)
North Shore commenced their 2007 premiership defence on Saturday night with a hard fought contest against St George at Henson Park. With the game never reaching any great heights in terms of skill, the North Shore coaching staff were pleased with the first round effort despite going down by 7 points.
North Shore appeared to be in control for most of the game but could not break the shackles of the strong St George side. At half time North Shore were up by 7 points mainly through the work of 18 year old ruckman Max Wilson and some good play from on ballers David Conway and Anthony Lowes. Seven players made their senior debut for North Shore on the night and all players acquitted themselves well, in particular Adrian Harry down back, Mitch Thompson at half forward and Max Wilson.
After half time there continued to be only a kick in it and late into the last quarter the scores were level and the match could of gone either way. Some poor skill errors cost North Shore and St George finished in front by 1 point at the final siren. A shot on goal after the siren saw St George kick the goal and take the final margin out to 7 points.
It was an encouraging start for North Shore who have lost some experienced players after the 2007 premiership. The side looks set to benefit from the return of several injured players and new recruits in the coming weeks. The final match details were:
