Tricky conditions tested the Nor-West Jets at Bensons Lane on Saturday, as they hosted Macquarie University in Division 3 Sydney Football.
The Jets had accounted for the Warriors earlier in the season, but a youthful outfit greeted Nor-West, and from the opening bounce, Mac Uni moved the ball well and defended with some courageous efforts. Most of the play was camped in the Jets forward 50 for the first term, for a return of only 2 goals, while the Warriors were rewarded with one of their own, and if not for the slick aerial work of gun ruck Ben Jennison, in another Best On Ground performance, the visitors score could’ve been much worse. However, the home team tightened their defence in the second quarter, with Daniel Guthridge and Aaron Bayne in sublime form, while Warwick Smith and David Clinch were brutal off the half back line. The Jets turned it on before half time, adding 6 goals to 1 to take a 45 point advantage to the main break.
The Jets midfield upped their intensity in the second half, with Owen Butcher and Ethon Coombs dominating their opponents. Inaccuracy crept in with the howling breeze across the field, and Nor-West added 4 goals and 7 behinds, to Warriors nil score, and the last quarter was much the same, Nor-West moving the play from side to side through Josh Patterson and Louis Butler, feeding the tall forwards of Dylan Cruz and Josh James as the Jets slammed on a further 6 goals and kept the Warriors scoreless for the second half to storm home 115 point winners, Nor-West 18.19-127 to 2.0-12.

Reserve Grade headed to Gipps Road to tackle Holroyd-Parramatta, and with a 210 point win in the Round 6 fixture, hopes were high of a repeat performance. However, the Goannas applied constant pressure to the Jets early, keeping the margin at quarter time to just 13 points, Nor-West wasteful in front of goals. It was much the same in the second quarter, as Nor-West could only manage 1 more goal. Strong performances from Harry Stever, Josh Edwards and Liam Veigel, after recent stints in Seniors, kept the Jets in front by 23 at half time.
Last time the two teams met, the Jets destroyed the Goannas in the third term with a return of 12 straight goals, but this time the home team scored some respect, keeping Nor-West to only 6 goals with as many behinds. Pete Richardson welcomed some form back on the wing, while Owen Hickman and Luke Judd created plenty of opportunities up front, and the Jets added 5 more goals in the final term to run out convincing winners against a determined Parramatta outfit, Nor-West 14.22-106 to 1.0-6.
