An escalating injury toll, true winter conditions and a near dawn start saw the Nor-West Jets Seniors crash down to earth against Pennant Hills at Cherrybrook on Saturday. The Jets selected a strong squad on Thursday but lost Captain Owen Butcher, tall forward Josh James and young guns Connor Moore and Josh Edwards in the days following, but started the game well after conceding the first goal, with three straight before the ball, and the field became heavy and water logged. The Jets moved the ball well around the vast expanses of Mike Kenny Oval and tested the Demons defence, and took a 16 point lead to the first break.
Kyle Clarke made a welcome return to the Seniors after a 6 week layoff, while Jesse Pinder relished the opportunity to flew his muscle in the top grade, breaking packs and sending the ball regularly into the forward 50, but Nor-West couldn’t capitalise with constant pressure from Pennant Hills. The rain tumbled and the Jets went to sleep, as the Demons ran riot, kicking 7 for the quarter and the next 10 goals before Nor-West could add one of their own midway through the 3rd term. Nor-West lost their familiar run-and-carry game as Pennant Hills stifled their creativity, with the Jets defence of Schwager, Pond and Bayne trying valiantly to reduce the home side’s scoring, while Dave Clinch played his usual tough game off half back.
Nor-West managed 2 goals in the third quarter, with Jarryd Smith, Brad Burn and Louis Butler finding rare space, and with a 35 point deficit at the last break, it was going to be tough to play back into the contest. A slick Pennant Hills outfit added 3 more goals and held the Jets to a single behind and handed Nor-West their second loss of the season, running out convincing winners 14.7-91 to Nor-West 5.8-38.

The loss puts a dent in the Jets percentage but they still hold 2nd place, and face a huge task against 1st placed Randwick City at Malabar this week.
Reserve Grade headed to Paddington and the unhappy hunting ground of Trumper Park to take on the strong UTS Bats, and with the Senior team’s seemingly endless injury toll, fielded a relatively undermanned squad. The Jets started with a goal and peppered the posts to finish the quarter with 1 goal 6 behinds, while conceding a late goal to the Bats. Experienced defender Matt Brophy led the charge at full back, containing his dangerous opponent and linking well with Blake Heggie and Alex Lorenzelli, who showed poise and intelligence in only their first seasons of football. It was an arm wrestle in the second term, with the Jets only able to score one goal and keep UTS scoreless.
It was all Nor-West in the second half, as 18 year old Liam Veigel dominated the middle along with Zack Coombs and Jerry Dilger. A strong performance that saw UTS only score 1 point after quarter time, and if not for inaccurate kicking, the Jets could’ve won by a much bigger margin, but it was Nor-West’s first win at Trumper since 2009, and another week on top of the Division 5 ladder, Jets 9.14-68 to UTS 1.2-8.
