The Nor-West Jets headed up Castlereagh Rd for the local derby with 3rd placed Penrith Rams at Cranebrook on Sunday, with a fiery encounter all but assured before the first bounce. The Jets, and Hawkesbury Saints before them, and Rams have had a long and proud history as western rivals, dating back to 1980 when Penrith actually competed as Hawkesbury’s reserve grade, and this clash was to be no different. The Jets welcomed back Co-Captain and defensive lynch pin Warwick Smith and Troy Clent to fill the role vacated by Josh Howe, and the game started with a great display of skills by both teams. The Rams got the first goal on the board before the Jets replied with one of their own. Every contest had some added spice, with players from both teams having competed against each other since junior football days, and the scores stayed locked up at the first two breaks.
Spot fires were breaking out all over the ground as tempers flared. Adam Newton & Troy Clent stood tall in the rucks, while David Clinch and Brad Pond turned in some inspiring passages of play across half back, putting their bodies on the line time and again. Owen Butcher left his mark on the game with fearless tackling as the Jets turned the screws on Penrith in the third quarter, adding two goals to the Rams one, and in an intense final quarter, evergreen veteran Michael Gray roved a pack and snapped the impossible goal to seal the win for the Jets, 7.9-51 to 6.9-45.
