Congratulations to everyone that participated in the North Shore AFL Adventure Race on Saturday 15 February.
The race start & finish line was at the idyllic Balmoral beach, as 13 teams headed to the start line, made up of players from across all grades, friends and family’s as they prepared to go head to head in the wet weather. They would take on the mighty hills of Balmoral and Mosman across 4 different courses, not to mention a swim leg, general knowledge questions, and a kayak activity in-between the running courses.
The pre-race brief was simple, stay out of trouble (tick), spend some time working out the best approach for your course (some ticks) and decide if time was to be spent finding bonus makers resulting in time deductions across the 4 different courses (majority tick).
While the pre-race talk had some of the U19 teams in the front running, a few of the senior squad teams already had their hands on the prizes, the girls team looked like serious contenders, but few had realised that a couple of super teams had assembled amongst the Div 4/5 teams.
And that’s exactly how it turned out, the Div 4/5 team of Bobby Beissmann, Mark Folkes, David McDonnell and Alan Purcell took out first place in just over 2 hours. The secret weapon was Folkesy, who knew every street, side lane and set of stairs across all four courses. 9 minutes behind in second place was the senior squad team made up of Jas Russell-Jones, Richard Snowden, Anthony Johnson, Jimmy Bergmann (U19’s) and Nick Todd. Rounding out the podium in third place was another Div4/5 team with Nick Adams, James Hollonds, Andrew Montgomery and Sean Kinsella. Most survived the event with a smile, no doubt some dubious photo’s not in alignment with the courses they were running, but apparently the wet weather must have been causing some technical glitches.
A big thank you to our sponsors involved in the event.
2XU Mosman store provided the prizes for our podium finishing teams. A big thank you to Daniel for helping us out. The 2XU store was one of the markers on the 2nd course, as all teams had to visit the store. Chloe was running the 2XU store on Saturday and she would have been over the moon to have the likes SOS getting in there without his top on - what a missed opportunity to cover him up with some of 2XU best sporting gear. A big thank you to Jeff from Kayak Fitness, for letting us use his kayak’s in the adventure race. Kayak Fitness runs fitness training groups using kayaks which gives you the best low impact, core workout there is.
Kayak Fitness combine our sessions with beach running, stretches and exercises which gives you a fantastic all over workout while learning to paddle correctly at the same time.
You'll be inspired for the day when you see the sun rising over the Harbour as you train in our on water sessions. A few familiar North Shore past players are already doing the Kayak Fitness sessions, well worth a go regardless of previous kayak experience. http://www.kayakfitness.net.au/
Make sure to post up a couple of photo’s from each team from the day on the main club facebook page.
Here’s already looking forward to the 2015 North Shore AFL Adventure Race !
