The Nor-West Jets played host to the Campbelltown Blues in warm conditions at Bensons Lane on Saturday in front of a healthy crowd for their annual Back To Bensons Day.
The Blues, although propping up the bottom of the ladder without a win, had been pushing their opponents in recent weeks and almost upset 6th placed Wests in the previous round, so the Jets knew they had their work cut out for them if they were to secure the 4 points.
The Jets had some strong inclusions into their line up from the Penrith game, with Captain Paul Webster returning, along with young gun Harry Stever, fresh from his Ashes experience in the Ol Dart.
Campbelltown took the early initiative in the first quarter and kicked the first goal of the game, as the Jets peppered the goals with some inaccurate kicking. David Clinch picked up where he left off the previous week with a destructive display across half back, while Tom Roberts played the ‘swing man’ role across the centre. The Jets held a slender lead at the first break, and the Blues came out hard in the second term in search of their maiden win of 2013, with some of their players having Premier Division experience with their Seniors team. The return from injury of Doug Linnett gave the Jets some much needed speed across half forward, and he was well supported by the young brigade of Michael Morgan and Blake Heggie on the wings. Campbelltown had 3 goals for the quarter and the scores were locked at 33 apiece at half time.
Again, inaccuracy cost the Jets a percentage boost on the ladder, as they added 6 behinds and no goals, but luckily kept Campbelltown scoreless in the third quarter, with Daniel Guthridge and Julian Goonan dominant in the backline, while Paul Webster stood tall in the ruck, feeding the midfield with some quality service. Finally the Jets clicked in the last term and added 4 goals while keeping the hard working Blues to a single point, and ran out 31 point winners in a physical encounter, 8.17-65 to 5.4-34.
