After being trounced at home by a rampaging Western Suburbs, the Nor-West Jets consolidated their top 5 spot with a resounding 70 point win over a gallant Southern Power at Taren Point on Saturday.
The Jets welcomed back a swag of experience into the fold, with Kyle Clarke, Julian Goonan and Aaron Bayne providing some much needed guidance around the field, and with Wests breathing down the Jets’ necks in the battle for 5th spot, nothing more than a big win would please the coaching staff.
Captain Webster won the toss and the Jets opened up early, as they slammed on 6 goals in the first term, moving the ball with some terrific skill. Ethon Coombs and Grant Hoffmann had the lions share of the ball out of the centre, feeding Webster and Clarke with some delicious service. Daniel Guthridge showed great support to Goonan & Bayne, and the Jets were 5 goals up at the first break.
5 more goals in the second half from Nor-West showed they meant business, with Dylan Cruz providing a strong target at Centre Half Forward, while the return of Pete Richardson on the wing saw him with plenty of the football. The back 6 conceded 2 cheap goals, and with a half time deficit of 49 points, it looked a matter of how much.
Southern Power came out hard in the 3rd quarter, and matched the Jets goal for goal as Nor-West became lazy around the ground, often second to the contest and not giving their opponents the respect they deserve. Brad Pond and rookie Luke Judd showed the tough footy required in the absence of the terrifying David Clinch, and with vice captain Tom Roberts sustaining a concussion from a head knock, it was time to stand up and put the result away in the last quarter.
In an entertaining final quarter, the Jets opened up the flood gates, with Webster kicking 4 last quarter goals, and Jesse Pinder asserting his authority on the game with some destructive running, as Nor-West secured 5th spot with a 70 point victory on an always tough road trip, 19.9-123 to Power 8.5-53.
