In a commanding best on ground performance from Captain Paul Webster and a dominant midfield display, the Nor-West Jets pushed aside fellow top five aspirant and premiership contender Gosford Wildcats by 37 points at Bensons Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The Jets, in what proved to be arguably their best win of the year came out in the first quarter all guns blazing.
Struggling all year to start games well, the Nor-West coaches asked the question of their players before the game and answer they did.
Kicking against a strong breeze in the opening quarter the Jets were relentless in their attack on the footy. David Clinch and Stephen Davidson off half back, Kyle Clarke in the Midfield and Dylan Cruz up forward set the tone early. By quarter time Nor-West held a slight 1 goal advantage over the dangerous Wildcats.
The second quarter saw the Jets capitalise on the breeze blowing towards the river end, as they sent the ball forward with alarming regularity, and if not for some desperation shown by Gosford's defence, the half time margin could've been bigger, as Nor-West added 4 goals to a single goal for the visitors, with a 22 point deficit at the long break. Tom Roberts was controlling the tempo of the game across the middle, while Pete Richardson tamed the influence of the dangerous Aaron Smith on the wing.
The all important third quarter saw the home side charge out of the blocks, and kicking into an increasingly strong breeze, played their best quarter of the season as they put on a remarkable 5 goals to 1, playing inspired football to almost put the result beyond question. Webster was unstoppable in the air, while Daniel Guthridge and Aaron Bayne at the other end of the field were responsible for limiting the influence of Gosford's twin power forwards Eather and Manuelle. The 6 goal margin at 3 qtr time saw the Jets relax in the early stages of the last quarter as the Wildcats added the first two goals, but Nor-West knuckled down and added two more to send Gosford packing and consolidate their spot in the 5 12.11-83 to 6.10-46.
Goals P Webster 6, S Tibben 2, E Coombs 1, T Roberts 1, K Clarke 1, G Hoffmann 1.
