THE Nor-West Jets forgot how to kick straight at Bensons Lane on Saturday – and it almost certainly cost them the match against Sydney University.
Taking on the competition leaders, the Jets kicked a massive 14 behinds, while only slotting the four goals in their 23-point loss.
It was a sombre mood at the start, as the Jets paid tribute to Nick Edwards, a promising under 18s player who was tragically taken from us earlier this year.
Edwards was given a minute’s silence by both teams and the home side wore black armbands, and will continue to do so at every match this year.
The match, which was played in tough conditions, started best for the visitors, who piled on five unanswered goals in the first term.
The backline, led by Daniel Guthridge and Julian Goonan, saved the home side from further catastrophe.
It wasn’t until the second period that the home side finally started to play some good football, as they reversed the first quarter trend to keep Sydney University scoreless while posting three goals of the their own.
With a nine-point deficit at the long break, the Jets fought hard against the skilful visitors but if it weren’t for some horribly inaccurate kicking, they might have snatched a win.
The Hawkesbury men kicked one goal and eight behinds in the second half as head coach Chris Kyle paid tribute to the Sydney defence. “The constant pressure from Uni, coupled with a heavy ball and lack of composure, saw us kick 14 behinds,” he said.
The Jets face Southern Power at Bensons on Saturday, with action starting from 1pm.
