Kurrajong wonderkid and reigning Shipley Medallist, Josh Cass is proving to be one of the young guns of the Sydney AFL Premier Division with a Best On Ground effort for his new club, the Balmain Dockers, in their 10 goal win over UTS at Henson Park on Sunday. This culminated in his first selection in the AFL Sydney Team of the Week, an oustanding acheivement in only his 6th game, and follows his NAB Rising Star Nomination in Round 1.
Cass dominated from the half back line, creating havoc for the Bats coaching staff. Even without the ball, 'Bondi' left his mark on many of his opponents with his trademark relentless tackling and chasing pressure. For this 18 year old to stand so tall among a team full of experienced campaigners, including Sydney Swan cult hero Troy Luff, is testament to his natural talent and desire to learn and improve with every game.
Cass took the step up to the Premier Division with former Jets mentor Garry Bull in 2012, and Bull says being surrounded by elite players has taken his game to another level. "Josh is easy to coach. He listens to instruction and follows the game plan to a tee. His forte is his defensive pressure, but being exposed to this grade has improved his ball skills out of sight."
Cass has also played 2 games for the Sydney Swans Reserve Grade in the North Eastern FL, highlighted by a 2 goal performance on the big stage against GWS at the Swans v Giants Derby at ANZ Stadium in March.
There has never been any doubt of Josh's ability to those who have seen him develop his football at Bensons Lane, and the greater football community is beginning to take notice of the boy from the Hawkesbury, as he continues to take Sydney footy by storm.
