Last week saw 2 close games at Bensons Lane and a loss at Penrith that left the Jets without a win for the weekend. The U18s fought hard for 3 of the 4 qtrs against the Power in blustery conditions with Liam Veigel putting in a great performance. The Jets after leading by 3 goals at half time let the boys from the Shire back in and only lead by a point at 3qtr time but Brent Johnston and Peter Martinoli with their continued hard running and continually attack on the footy were keeping the fight up for the Jets. The last quarter saw both sides kick 3 goals each but unfortunately for the Jets they could not quite get over the line but impressed all with their fighting qualities against the ladder leaders. Keep it up boys your hard work and effort is noticed by all at Bensons Lane.
The magoos travelled up Castlereagh Rd to face the Penrith Rams at Greygums Oval in Round 8 action. With a heavy injury toll in Seniors, the reserves were long shots with the bookies for this derby, and after losing Pete Richardson in the warm up, the signs were not looking too good for the Boys from Bensons. The gale blew off the mountains and across the ground all day, making conditions tricky, and it was the Riff that took the early initiative, finding regular targets and putting the Jets under enormous pressure. The Jets were trying hard to keep possession, with Daniel Harding and Brett Carroll standing up against the early onslaught. Matt Brophy was holding firm at full back, well supported by the returning Adam Newton, who picked up the great football he was playing back in 2010. Steve Steaszek and Jesse Pinder picked up plenty of the ball, and if not for the poor accuracy of the home team, the half time deficit would’ve been much greater. The Jets were down to no bench after losing new recruit Mitch Watkins to injury sustained in a contest, but the boys never gave up, despite not bothering the scoreboard all day. Scott Allan was presenting well at CHF but the Rams had an answer to quell any forward forays, and ran out winners by 16 goals.
In the second cliff hanger for the day at Bensons Lane the Seniors had their chances but could not peg back the boys from St George and lost out in the dying moments by 7 points. A slow start by the Jets saw the Dragons open up a halftime lead of 19 points with Johno Dowl , Dougie Linnett & Aaron Bayne continuing their good work from last week. After some clear instructions at half time the Jets played their footy in the 2nd half and kicked quick goals in the 3rd to get back into the match lead by Dave Clinch and Paul Sherwood and at 3qtr time it was anyones game. Even though the Jets continued on in the last they could not quite get over the Dragons but you could not doubt the sides fighting qualities.
The next home game for the Jets is June 16th against Uni of NSW
