A COACH who proves he's prepared to bleed for the team is always in the best position to lead the team.
For the University Hawks that man is Casey Wenselowski.
Wenselowski has been announced as the new coach of last season's AFL Townsville wooden spooners and has immediately asserted his desire to turn the Hawks into lean, mean fighting machines in 2012.
"Something that I really want to push into the side this year is the fitness side of it," the 30-year-old said.
"The few games that I watched this year, they were in the contest, but faded in the final term ... so I want to get a game plan that involves a running style of football and being able to run out a game.
"Pre-season could be a bit of a wake-up call, I think."
But Wenselowski, who spent the past seven seasons playing in Sydney, is far from about to leave his boys to hurt on their own.
He will take on a playing-coach role and promised he would experience every sit up, push up and hill climb with them.
"A lot of core strength will be built into the training," Wenselowski said.
"I'm hoping to get my fitness up, so whatever the boys suffer with, I'll definitely be suffering with them as well."
After University played in eight consecutive AFL Townsville grand finals up until 2010, the Hawks suffered a major form dip last year, winning just one game and finishing at the foot of the ladder.
Wenselowski was confident he could transform Uni into a far more competitive unit.
"For a start I just want to get blokes enjoying coming down and playing footy, that's the start, and then you start winning games from there," he said.
