Last week saw the Seniors take on one of the biggest road trips in Sydney football with the journey down to Wollongong and still smarting after last week’s defeat were looking to make amends. The Jets kicked the first goal of the game but the Lions hit straight back and only for the straight kicking of the Jets did they lead at qtr time. Tom Roberts was creating great rebound along with Andrew Travers for the Jets in what was to become an arm wrestle for the entire match. The Jets managed to have their noses just in front at the half & 3 qtr time break with the determined efforts of Owen Butcher and Aaron Lawes helping to push the Jets along. Dave Clinch showed what was required of the Jets in the 5 mins before 3 qtr time with some great straight line running and the Jets knew they would have to play 4 qtrs to get up in this one. Johno Dowl controlled the final term with a cool head and debutant DG managed to continue with his straight kicking to finish with 4 goals straight to see the Jets win by 2 goals in a game that saw neither team really assert any dominance but was a tight contested game of football. In what was a great team effort the boys sung the song with as much gusto as the GWS Giants or those backing Black Caviar. Thanks to Wollongong for their hospitality.

The Nor-West Jets Reserve Grade turned in an award winning Jekyll & Hyde performance in Round 6 action at Bensons Lane, when they clashed with Macquarie Uni. With a slight breeze against them in the first term, the Jets looked close to unstoppable as they moved the ball into the forward 50 with regular ease. Steve Davidson and Matt Smith were the chief architects in the middle of the ground, feeding off the tap ruck work of Joe Pajeska, playing in his long awaited 50th game for the Jets. Jesse Pinder was dishing out his usual brutality across the centre, pulling down countless grabs and effortlessly breaking tackle after tackle. The Jets kicked 6 straight into the wind and kept the Warriors to just 2 straight, and with the breeze picking up, saw a chance to boost their percentage. The backline of Matt Brophy, Mick Yee and Steve Steaszek were toiling away on the young Warriors, and if not for a 50m penalty through poor discipline that led to a goal, the home side could’ve kept Uni scoreless. But the Jets forwards were in scintillating touch, with Pete & Chris Kyle adding a few on their way to sharing 10 goals between them for the day, Nor-West sending home 7 goals in the 2nd to hold a commanding 60 point lead at the long break.
And that’s where the rot set in. For some inexplicable reason, the Jets put the cue in the rack and let Mac Uni play on their own, led by the evergreen Kookas trio of Carter Mullins, Matt Tharme and Scott Uglow, they used the ball much more effectively in the second term and showed the Jets that football is played over 4 quarters. The only real highlight for Nor-West in the second half being a great high mark to Davidson, climbing his opponent like he had 3 legs. The Jets could only manage 2 goals in an abysmal 2nd half and earning themselves a delightful blast from the coach after the game. With poor numbers on the training track a constant problem, the season ahead is in the hands of those who wish to commit. Round 7 sees Manly head to Bensons in a 5th v 6th clash, and after a 40 point loss in Round 2 to the Wolves, this sets up as a huge clash against our Peninsula rivals.

A fine but windy day greeted the U18’s at Henson Pk on Sunday as they took on the Balmain Dockers. Kicking with the wind the Jets managed to kick away but the Dockers hung in and were only 9 point down at qtr time. The 2nd term would be a tough one against the stiff breeze and with Luke having his best game for the season and the rest of the backline working hard the Jets managed to hold onto a 1 point lead at the main break after kicking 2 goals into the wind. Even with Brent continuing to put his body into every contest and Ethon starting to read the play better in the wind the Jets could not capitalise with the 3rd qtr breeze at their back and went in down at the last break by 8 points. The last term saw the Dockers use the wind to their advantage to kick the first 2 goals of the last and a big margin was looming but to the credit of the Jets they fought this one out to the end only going down by 4 goals in the end. Well done to John Manoel & Jayden Bray who both debuted for the Jets.
