The Nor-West Jets found themselves road trippin’ across Sydney in Round 2 action, with Div 2 & 4 heading to the boneyards of Weldon, and the Colts travelling south to Malabar to face the other NKOTB, Saints AFC.
With a few unavailabilities, the magoos took only 20 players to face a strong Manly team, and an even first term saw the Wolves take a narrow lead. In the second, the Jets began to move the ball around with confidence, but with Disco going down with a knee injury before half time, there was less spark up forward, and the Jets defence, led by Scott Allan and Matt Brophy held the home team at bay, Manly heading to the ‘sheds’ with a 3 goal lead.
The twos were asked for a lift in the 2nd half and matched Manly in the third, with Scott Longman in fine form on season debut, ably supported by Brett Carroll on the wing and in defence. Steve Steasek struck fear into the Wolves players with a savage but fair contest, cleaning up a poor Manly player who must now think Saturday was all a dream. Rod Bayne goaled from a ridiculous angle, and with some poor discipline from the home mob, the Jets had a chance to sneak a rare victory away from Weldon.
With a nice goal to returning junior Glenn Stewart on debut to open the quarter, the Jets smelt blood. Joe Pajeska was winning more than the lions share from the middle, and Steve Davidson and Mick Yee causing problems through the middle, but with no-one on the bench, and Manly swamping the backline with pink cattle, they ran out 40 point victors, 9.16 to 4.6, with goals to Rocket, Glenno, Scooter and Woofy, in his first game since 2005. The Jets head to Mahony Park to face UTS next Saturday.

In the Div 2 fixture, the Jets named a strong side on paper, seeing the return of Maysy, Bison, Wokka, Lawesy and Howey to the squad, but it was all Manly on their home deck, reaping the rewards of a tough pre-season campaign. The Jets could only manage 1 goal to half time and conceded 5, and if not for the desperation of the defensive 6, led by Shagga, Rowdy and Spesh, the margin at the break could’ve resembled a Giants game.
The Wolves had all the run in the 3rd term but the Jets weren’t about to lie down, even 6 goals down at the last break failing to deflate them. Howey, Maysy and Hoff were presenting well, feeding off Spider’s fine aerial displays, and Dyldow was leading the way off the back flank, and the Jets matched Manly in the final term with 3 goals each, however the result was sealed in the sunset as the Wolves wrapped up proceedings by 6 goals, 11.7 to 5.7. Howey, Bison, Hoff, Morgs and Gutho kicked one apiece, and the boys will welcome back key players for their crucial match with bogey team Auburn at Mona Park this week.

With a late fixture change for the 18s, they missed some important players for their Sabbath match with Maroubra. The baby Jets started the match in strong form, leading at the first two breaks in the warm conditions, Brentos and Coogee setting the tome. Mick Sieders, ‘The Kurrajong Kid’ was burning up the paddock with his deluxe neck warmer, fighting off opposition and local fillies alike, and Joely and Braidy providing good targets up front, the Jets led the Saints by 4 at the long break.
The Saints, with a full bench this week, defying the near 40 goal opening round loss, took it up to the undermanned Jets in the third, adding 3 and keeping Nor-West goalless, with Seb Goldrick and Harry Stever limiting the damage on the scoreboard. Billy Mac in his first game in blue and white was on fire, with Coully playing his usual calm under fire game as well, and it was goal for goal in the last, but the third quarter proved the undoing for Nor-West’s colts, as the Pride of Bensons went down gallantly by 19 points, 11.14 to 8.13. Goals to Joel and Braid (1 each) with one each to Brentos, Haydos, Sebanon and Mick-Bob. The Colts head to Mac uni to face the Warriburras this weekend, with a win required to maintain their Top 4 spot.
