THE Nor-West Jets have been handed a challenging opening to the 2012 AFL Sydney Division Two season after being scheduled to play four of their first six matches away from home.
The Jets will start their campaign on their home deck at Bensons Lane with a clash against western Sydney rivals Moorebank on Saturday, March 31, before the Easter break on April 7.
Once that is out of the way, the Jets will return to the scene of their round 18 hiding from 2011 to take on Manly-Warringah, before a trip to Auburn to take on a Tigers team that scored two dominant wins last season.
Following a home game against Camden in round four, Nor-West hit the road for another fortnight, but won’t mind the opportunity to play on two Premier League grounds in consecutive weeks – Sydney University No.1 Oval against the Students and, for the first time in eight years, the two-hour trip down to North Dalton Park in Towradgi to take on the Illawarra Lions.
The finish to the season will also provide some challenges for the Jets.
Although the final two games will be at home, they will be against 2011 finalists Sydney Uni and Balmain, with the two matches preceding that being against the promoted UNSW-Eastern Suburbs and Moorebank.
Nor-West also received two Sunday matches, the clash against the Bulldogs in round 15, and before that against Balmain in round 13.
The reserves also have been handed a number of long trips during the season in Division Four, but will open with a hugely anticipated clash with arch-rivals and 2011 grand finalists Penrith at Bensons Lane.
That will be followed by trips to Manly and UTS, a home game against Div Five premier Southern Power and then a trip to Holroyd-Parramatta.
The Jets will also travel to Gore Hill to play North Shore, Cronulla to meet the Power and, in round 12, a first ever trip to Gosford to meet competition newcomers the Wildcats.
The under 18s have an opportunity to get their first campaign since 2004 off to a flying start with a home match against Moorebank, which missed last year’s finals, before meeting the other competition newcomers, Saints AFC, at Maroubra on a Sunday in round two.
They have a keenly anticipated clash with Holroyd-Parramatta at Gipps Road in round four, and another against the newly-named Sydney Hills Eagles in round eight at Bruce Purser Reserve in Kellyville.
The young Jets’ toughest stretch comes in rounds 11-13, with consecutive away games against grand finalist Manly-Warringah and then Southern Power (at 8.30am at Cronulla), before the return game against the Goannas.
They finish with three consecutive home games, meeting Macquarie University Warriors, Sydney Hills and Balmain to round out the season.
