THE future of the Nor-West Jets Australian Football Club went on display in the club’s most recent home games against St George and UTS on June 26.
Hugely talented young midfielder Nick Edwards, 15, a prime mover with the Hawkesbury Saints under 16 team, made his senior debut in the 66-point victory over the Dragons and showed plenty of good signs to suggest he is going to be an outstanding player in the future.
After starting on the bench, Edwards made an early appearance and showed plenty of composure each time he got the ball in his hands, winning enough possessions to play a solid role in the strong victory and leaving coach Garry Bull and the club’s supporters with plenty of smiles on their faces.
Meanwhile, another classy youngster, Jesse Cass, 15, the younger brother of star midfielder and last year’s Shipley Medal runner-up Josh, produced a dominant display to be one of the key catalysts in the reserves’ big upset victory over UTS.
Cass made his senior debut in the hefty loss to Balmain at Mahoney Park in round three, showing handy signs that day, and he was unstoppable against the Bats, winning more than 30 disposals and showing maturity beyond his years, both in his delivery and his deft footwork around the packs that created numerous clearances for his team.
Both boys have trained often with the senior squad and are reaping the rewards for their efforts, while also starring in their Saints’ team that is currently fighting hard for a finals’ berth, and both will come into contention for selection again this week with the junior team having another bye.
