AFTER a good win against Macquarie Uni in round one of the Sydney AFL competition, the Nor-West Jets were looking to kick off their second game, against UNSW/ES Whales, in the same hard-hitting fashion.
Derek Baban took some strong marks early and it looked like a carbon copy of last week's game, with the Jets scoring two quick goals.
Some inaccurate kicking and a congested forward line stopped that with the team only managing one more goal and six points for the remainder of the quarter.
The second term saw a more evenly balanced game with the Jets tackling and intensity at the ball a feature, but again failure to convert opportunities let them down.
After the main break the instructions were to keep up the intensity and make the most of scoring opportunities to get some goals on the board, but the quarter didn't go quite to plan as the determined UNSW/ES team kicked three goals in a row to threaten the Jets' control.
The Jets needed to settle down and get back to basics and two lucky goals late in the quarter seemed to do that.
The last quarter saw the Jets stop the Whales' momentum with two more steadying goals to record a 41-point win: 9.13 (67) to 3.8 (26).
Best on ground for the Jets was Steve Burrows, while Gerard Smitts, Scott Allen and Julian Goonan also played strong matches.
Despite the comfortable margin, there's still a few areas of the game for the Jets to work on during the week.
