SENIORS MATCH REPORT v PENRITH RAMS
THE Nor-West Jets broke through for their first win of the Sydney AFL
season and sent departing club stalwart Adrian Wombat Wagner out a winner when they
defeated Penrith by 55 points in a drama-packed match at Penrith's Greygums
Oval on Saturday.
With the Rams leading by 19 points midway through the third term and
threatening to break clear, Nor-West spotted the home team replacing one
player with two on the interchange.
Quick thinking by the Jets' heirachy saw the unusual occurrence of a head
count and Penrith was found to have 19 players on the field instead of the
permitted 18.
In Australian Rules football, the administrative error from the Rams saw
their entire score of 12.4 76 wiped from the board and the Jets suddenly
found themselves in front 9.3 57 to 0.0 0.
The Jets banged on two quick goals before three quarter time to lead 11.3
69 to 0.3 3 at the final change, and victory was secured.
Where most teams hit with a fatal sting such as that would lose the plot
and start playing dirty, to the Rams' credit, they banded together and
attacked the football hard in a bid to regain some lost percentage, but
inaccuracy hurt them and the Jets ran out 12.6 78 to 2.11 23 winners.
Earlier on, fantastic performances from Gerard Ged Smits, who was everywhere,
big man Dale Boots Wellington and utility Matt Loz Laurence in his best game of the
season, set the Jets on the right track as they turned a five-point quarter
time lead into a 24-point advantage midway through the second term.
But as with the match against Holroyd-Parramatta in round one, when the
first division club raised its intensity, the Jets struggled to answer and by
the main break the margin was back to what it was at quarter time, and Jets
coach Peter Pekay Kyle had been reported for charging in what appeared to be a soft
decision.
With the momentum heading into the second half, the Rams heaped the
pressure on the Jets and kicked five quick goals to one to take the match by
throat before the Jets' bench spotted the Rams' error and the drama unfolded.
Wagner, returning from a calf injury, turned in a magnificent performance
in an unfamiliar role on half forward, booting three goals to give himself
yet another good memory of his 10-plus years at the club prior to his move to
Queensland.
Smits also kicked three, while Wellington and Anthony Anto Riach booted two each.
Nick General Milkins and Stephen Stav Davidson were impressive across the middle and
Daniel Guffo Guthridge was outstanding in the back half as he regains his best form
after an injury riddled 2006.
It was a victory heaped with luck, but a victory nonetheless for the Jets,
who will improve when they welcome back Damien Browndog Brown, Casey BOFT Wenselowski,
Andrew Shagga Travers, Damien Cappa Shipley and Scott Giggles Travers in coming weeks to offset
the possible loss of Chris Disco Kyle (quad).
Nor-West has the bye this week and will chase its second win against
Macquarie University at Bensons Lane on May 19.

RESERVES MATCH REPORT v PENRITH RAMS
THE Jets narrowly missed out on securing their first win for the season
when they lost a thriller to Penrith by eight points.
In a match where no more than two goals separated the teams all day,
Penrith led by three points at quarter time and two points at half time
before the Jets claimed a two-point lead at the final change.
Nor-West kicked the first goal of the final quarter to lead by eight, but
couldn't hold off the Rams' late charge, and a goal on the siren gave the
home team an 11.8 74 to 10.6 66 win.
Stewart Pottsy Potts was a standout for the Jets, kicking six goals from full
forward despite playing with a quad strain, while Daniel Prawn Beck was in terrific
touch through the midfield with Tavis Shaw and Kevin Kevy Conroy.
First year player Chris Collo Collins continues to develop into a damaging centre
half back with another strong game, while Andrew Watto Watson battled hard against
a bigger opponent in defence.
Ruckman Sammy Tanuku was again in everything, as was Dylan Dildo Hynds, but the
biggest cheer was reserved for first gamer Glenn Tango Sillick, who kicked two
goals with his first kicks in football, both from strong marks in the goalsquare.

UNDER 18'S MATCH REPORT v ST IGNATIUS RIVERVIEW
PENRITH and Nor-West were of course on the same team in the early game, but
they found the private school boys from St Ignatius Riverview far too fleet
of foot in the under 18s.
After being the first on the scoreboard, the Ramjets were reduced to the
role of onlookers as Riverview piled on 13 unanswered goals in the first half.
It was a much better performance in the second half as the Ramjets kicked
4.10 to 4.6 against bigger and faster opposition to limit the damage to a 17.15 117 to 4.11 35 defeat.
Brendan Cooke, Michael Morgan and Nick Perry all played well for the
Ramjets, while Alan McCall, Dean Braid and Steven Albee never gave up all day.
The under 18s don't have a bye this week, and will take on the East Coast
Eagles, probably at Greygums Oval.
