NOR-WEST JETS MATCH REPORT ROUND 13
The Nor-West Jets played host to Manly-Warringah as part of Ladies/Sponsors Day, and with a healthy crowd on hand, the Jets had plenty to play for.
The Reserves went into the match having won 6 straight, and were keen to reverse the result against the Wolves earlier this season. The game started slowly as each team’s midfield won their share of the ball. The Jets welcomed back defensive keys Mat Laurence and John Davidson, and both players had an immediate impact. Jesse Bray, in his 50th game, was providing a handy target up forward, while Matt Brophy opened his season account with a nice goal, before holding up the ruck all day. Manly took a 2 goal lead into the first break, threatening to break Nor-West’s winning streak early. The Jets fought back in the 2nd term, with Steve Davidson on fire in a rare reserves appearance, and Chris Collins creating havoc through the middle, as the home side added 4 goals to 2 to lead by 4 points at half time.
Seniors assistant coach Darryl Hillier was moved to the loose role in defence and thwarted many Wolves attacking moves. Wooky set up the running players of Aaron Skinner, James Moynihan and best on ground Pete Richardson, while veterans Steve Chase and Nick Milkins turned back the clock with a classic performance in the middle. The Jets piled on the pressure, adding 3 goals to one in the important 3rd quarter, and 3 more in the last, while restricting Manly to only 2 goals for the 2nd half, as the Jets made it 7 in a row with a hard fought 27 point win, 11.11-77 to 7.8-50.
Goals- S. Davidson 3, M. Brophy, J. Bray, B. Gibson, B. Goodwin, C. Collins, N. Milkins, S. Braid, S. Chase 1 each..
Best- P. Richardson, S. Chase, A. Skinner, J. Davidson, J. Moynihan, C. Collins.
The Seniors were confident of a win this time around, having 11 players out when Manly triumphed by 15 points at Pittwater in the early rounds. Manly however, looked strong on paper, with their premiership players Blake Brendan and Matt Rawle- fresh from his epic Brisbane to Sydney Origin Walk-having a return run in Division 2. The first term saw both sides add 3 goals each in a classic arm wrestle. Paul Sherwood was presenting well on the forward flank, feeding off the solid work down back of Ben Cain, Jack Pascoe and Aaron Bayne. The second quarter saw the Jets start to click, as they added 4 goals while keeping the Wolves to one a single behind, to take a strong 27 point advantage to the sheds.
A win was needed to stay in 4th spot and keep Sydney Uni at bay, and the Jets responded to Coach Gareth Bull’s challenge in the second half, as John Dowl, described in Inside Football as ‘a midfield Bison’ exerted his influence through the centre, ably supported by Brendan Cameron and Doctor FLGOFF Ahearn. Star rookie Lachlan Eldridge chipped in with a fantastic goal, as the Jets slammed on 8 goals to 3 in the second half to power home 55 point winners, 15.7-97 to 6.6-42.
Goals- J. James 3, O. Butcher 2, B. Cameron 2, A. Travers 2, P. Sherwood 2, Dr FLGOFF, J. Thomson, L. Eldridge, T. Hurst 1 each.
Best- A. Bayne, J. Pascoe, J. Dowl, L. Eldridge, C. Ahearn, P. Sherwood.
The Jets travel to two of Sydney’s best grounds this week, with Seniors facing Balmain for the first time ever of Drummoyne Oval, while the Reserves face a top 2 team in old rivals Moorebank Sports at Rosedale Oval.
