The Nor-West Jets travelled to Mount Pleasant to take on long time rivals the Penrith Rams in the Western Derby, now in its 25th year. These games are always played in great spirit, but with plenty of passion on the field.
RESERVES MATCH REPORT v PENRITH RAMS
Reserve Grade started the day in good form, although a little inaccurate, adding 4 goals 8 behinds to Penrith’s no score, with a combination of a strong breeze and undisciplined forward delivery keeping the Rams within touch. Chris Disco Kyle, returning from injury, was instrumental playing an on-ball role, setting up many attacking moves, Andrew Hahny Hahn proving a handful for his former side’s defenders, and captain Nick Nickstar Bennett and Scott Scallan Allan unstoppable in the backline.
A lot of push and shove in the second quarter saw the Jets lose focus in the second quarter, with Penrith adding their only goal of the day through a great passage of play, and the Jets wasting opportunities, only scoring 2 goals 1 behind. Midfielders Dave Beacroft, Paul Coote, playing his former club, and coach Greg Jenko Jenkins were in everything, racking up possessions at will, sending the ball forward for targets Chris Collo Collins, Greg Stretch Allen and Dom Domma Shipley to add scoreboard pressure. To Penrith’s credit, they shut down many Jets attacking forays to go to half time down 1.2.8 to Nor-West 6.9.45.
A half time rev up by Coach Jenkins saw the Jets come out of the sheds inspired, playing some of their best football for the year, with only inaccuracy saving the Rams from a much bigger margin. Nor-West added 5 goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but also 13 behinds, and kept the home team scoreless in a great display of footy to run out 111 point victors.

SENIORS MATCH REPORT v PENRITH RAMS
The Seniors took to the field keen to atone for their early season loss to the Rams at Bensons Lane, with 11 changes adding more experience. The Jets started the game well, kicking into a strong breeze, with Peter Pekay Kyle adding the first goal of the game, assisting key forwards Jared Patira (ECE) and captain Andrew Shagga Travers, and the midfield of Damian Newson (ECE), Jack Sparrow Pascoe and Damian Browndog Brown winning their share of the ball. Penrith added the next three goals, and a game ending knee injury to utility tall Matt Oyster Brophy didn’t help matters. The Rams went to the 1st break with a slender 13 point lead.
The second term saw no quarter given, with the intensity and attack on the ball increasing, the Jets with the aid of the breeze taking the initiative, putting on 2 goals 5 behinds, and Penrith matching them with 2 goals of their own. Kyle, who went into the backline for some match ups, suffered an elbow injury, leaving the Jets with only two fit players on the bench for the remainder of the game. The defence of Nick General Milkins, Jon Schoey Schoenmaker, Paul Boggsy Sutcliffe and Daniel Guffo Guthridge were playing out of their skins, and kept the margin to only 11 points to the home team at the long break.
Unfortunately for the Jets, their focus in the second half was virtually non-existent, allowing Penrith to add 8 goals and keeping Nor-West goalless, but with the use of the breeze in the final term, the Jets needed to lift for a big last quarter.
Sparrow kicked an inspiring 60 metre goal to start proceedings, and Mitch Pies Billingham, Browndog and Shagga added one each, however Penrith could smell a victory, and matched the Jets with 4 of their own to finish convincing 61 point winners, securing their 3rd win in a row in seniors over the Jets.
Penrith 17.11.113 def Nor-West 7.10.52
Goals: Andrew Travers 3, Damian Brown, Peter Kyle, Jack Pascoe, Mitch Billingham
Best: Jack Pascoe, Damian Brown, Nick Milkins, Peter Brown, Damian Newson (ECE), Brendan Doyle (ECE)
The Jets head to Harrington Park to take on the improving Camden Cats next week, with a great chance of securing the points in both grades, but it wont be an easy task.
