RESERVES MATCH REPORT V SOUTHERN SHARKS
THE Nor-West Jets’ reserves finally delivered on the promise they have shown all year when they shocked the finals-bound Southern Sharks by one point in a Sydney AFL First Division thriller at Bensons Lane on Saturday.
The Jets welcomed back a large contingent of players in both grades that were unavailable last week, and it paid immediate dividends as the home team controlled the match for most of the day, leading by more than three goals in each of the second, third and final quarters.
Don Waterston proved unstoppable in winning centre clearances, Chris Collins dominated off half back and Jon Schoenmaker provided a dominant target up forward with four goals.
But the Sharks, who had two 10 goal wins over the Jets to their credit this season, aren’t third for nothing and they charged home with the last three goals, only to fall short by the barest of margins, 8.6 54 to 7.11 53.
Ruckman Paul Sutcliffe got better as the game went on and kicked two goals, as did Matt Davidson, while Chris Mattingley, David Beacroft and Damien Williams were also solid.
The result still leaves the Jets three wins from fourth spot and ruing their similar one-point loss to Holroyd-Parramatta in round 12.
SENIORS MATCH REPORT V SOUTHERN SHARKS
WITH players back on deck, the Jets were always expecting a better result than last week’s 193-point loss to Macquarie University, and while they got it, the Sharks were still far too poised in winning by 80 points, 18.13 121 to 5.11 41.
It didn’t take long for Nor-West to break the goal drought when Damien Brown goalled from the square in the early going, and the Jets trailed by just three points after a tight first term where neither team asked or gave any leeway.
Jack Pascoe bounced back into form in a more familiar position at ruck rover, while Peter Kyle was in good touch at centre half back and Eagles’ players Dean Eggleton and Chris Wynne were making their presence felt.
Paul Sherwood was another to continue his excellent form across half back, while Scott Allan, Damien and Peter Brown never gave up, but the Sharks did what they had to do after the break, kicking away to a comfortable win. Seniors lost 41-121
