NOR-WEST JETS vs CAMDEN CATS ROUND 10 MATCH REPORT
The Nor-West Jets travelled to Harrington Park to take on Camden in what shaped as two must win games to keep their season alive. The Seniors welcomed back utility Jake Berry from a long injury lay off, and the Jets begun the match a little slower than usual, conceding the 1st goal to the home side. But it wasn’t long before the Jets clicked into gear, and scored two goals of their own through the clever work of midfielders Dr Chris Ahearn, Johno Dowl and Josh Howe, who was targeted regularly during the match. It was two goals apiece in the second quarter, as the backline started to fire up. Captains Casey Wenselowski and Jack Pascoe, the latter suffering a huge knock early in the term, controlled the traffic off half back, setting up the running players of Butcher, Bayne and Sherwood, whose long left foot sent the ball into the forward 50 on many occasions. The Jets went to the sheds with a 16 point lead, and a chance to sneak into the top 4 on the line.
A blast from coach Bull saw the Jets come out hungry, as they kicked 5 goals and kept the dangerous Cats side to none, with Chris Graf instrumental in the middle, and Warwick Smith a shining light at Centre Half Forward. The game slowed down in the last term with the Jets adding one more, but their defensive 6 restricting Camden to a miserly 3 behinds for the entire 2nd half, as the Jets took the 4 premiership points back up the Northern Road with a 43 point win, 10.14-74 to 4.7-31.
Goals- P. Sherwood 2, T. Hurst 2, J. Berry 2, J. Howe 2, J. Dowl, O. Butcher 1 each.
Best- P. Sherwood, W. Smith, C. Ahearn, C. Wenselowski, C. Graf, J. Dowl.
The Reserves went into their match confident of a victory, but were certain to pay Camden a lot more respect than their round 1 encounter, which saw the Jets triumph by only 9 points. Matt Brophy made a return from a knee injury, and with some key additions around the ground, started the better, with 4 goals to 1 in the first half. Tim Tibben was relishing a rare appearance up forward, and Chris Lowe dominated in the ruck around the ground, feeding midfielders Steve Chase and Scott Braid. The Jets had the use of a swirling breeze that changed direction as many times as the score did, and with Brophy filling the Half Back hole that was left by an injured Hank Scorpio, ably assisted on the flank by Evan Dutton in a career best game, the Jets led by 16 points at half time.
With only 2 fit players on the bench after the break, Nor-West knew they’d have to turn it on in the all important 3rd term, and kept a restless Camden goalless while adding 2 of their own. Steve Steasek was having a field day, while Captain Norm Hanley and his deputy Mat Laurence led the back 6 all day, supporting key position players John Davidson and Aaron Skinner, who has adapted to the game with ease in his first year, while big men Jesse Bray and Dan Graham worked well out of the square.
Camden came out hard in the last quarter, kicking 2 goals to the Jets 1, but the damage was done and the result going to the away side, as Nor-West clung to a 21 point win to keep their slim finals hopes alive, 10.5-65 to 6.8-44.
Goals- T. Tibben 3, D. Graham 2, S. Tanuku, S. Braid, J. Bray, S. Steasek, C. Lowe.
Best- E. Dutton, M. Laurence, C. Lowe, A. Skinner, S. Steasek, J. Bray.
