NOR-WEST JETS MATCH REPORTS- ROUND 2
The Jets were split between grounds for the first time this year, with the Seniors travelling to the newly improved Gipps Road to take on perennial top 4 placers, Holroyd-Parramatta. The Jets have never beat the Goannas in Seniors since their inception in 2001, the closest being a thrilling 3 point loss in that year, and felt confident of their chances.
The game started slowly for the visitors, not helped by the delay of the first bounce due to the opening ceremony. With Jack Wilson making his senior debut in the ruck, following his BOG performance against the vastly improved Camden 2s the week before, and Luke Ayling being man handled at full forward with no help from the umpires, the Jets took a quarter time lead, than handed it back at the long break.
In a cracking game for the crowd on hand, the scores were locked at 55 apiece at 3 qtr time, with the Goannas having use of a handy breeze coming home, and used it to great effect, kicking 4 goals to the Jets one, to run out winners, 13.10-88 to 9.12-66. The Jets can take great heart from this match, as the Goannas should be right up there at the business end, and Nor-West showed they can match it with the good teams, they just need to maintain the rage, and bring a dose of “C” to their game.
Goals- Ayling 4, Sherwood, Howe, Dowl, Lloyd, Cass 1 each.
Best- J. Thomson, Cass, Howe, Dowl, Wilson, Smith.
In reserves, Nor-West took to Malabar, just north of the Victorian border to take on ladder leaders Maroubra Saints. With a strong breeze blowing across the ground, and the Saints rattling up nearly 60 scoring shots the previous week, the Jets knew that a 4 quarter effort was required.
The game was an arm wrestle all day, the margin never more than 3 goals to the home team. Things got worse when Nor-West co-captain Stu Potts and ruck Brad Goodwin were taken to hospital (albeit by themselves, and up the wrong direction of Anzac Pde) with a broken wrist and ankle respectively, effectively losing their main avenue to goal.
The Jets refused to lie down against the strong and experienced new kids of the block, General showing hs card on a few occasions, but with a bench of 4 reduced to none by 3 qtr time, and those on the field wearing some hard knocks from a very physical game, the Saints showed poise on their pretty ground, running out 28 point victors.
10.13-73 to 6.9-45.
Goals- Soggy 2, Lozza, General, Hot Dogs, B-Rad 1 each.
Best- Slappin, Elmo, China, General, Cappa, Guns.
The Jets welcome Balmain Dockers to Bensons for the first time in senior footy, and Moorebank in ressies, and invite them back to RGs for a beer, and the Jets will honour the ANZAC tradition the following morning at Windsor cenotaph. Good luck to all teams.
