NOR-WEST JETS MATCH REPORT- ROUND 1 vs CAMDEN
The Jets played host to Camden at Bensons Lane on Saturday, the first home game in Round 1 since 2004, when the Jets knocked off UNSW/ES, and the Jets were keen to repeat that winning feeling against the Cats.
In perfect conditions, the home team got off to a good start, sending 6 goals through the big sticks in the first quarter, while restricting the young Camden side to only 2. The Jets were looking strong around the ground against the typically determined Cats, with big man Ash Condon taking many telling marks in his defensive ruck role, while the midfield on John Dowl, Chris Graf and Mick Gray won the lions share of the ball, setting up power forward Luke Ayling, who racked up goals with ease.
Nor-West headed to the sheds with a comfortable 8 goal lead, but Coach Gary Bull could sense that the boys hadn’t even changed gears yet, and he urged his troops not to “rest on their morals” a quote that is sure to be repeated on this year’s footy trip shirts, verbatim.
The Jets stepped up a notch in the 2nd half, kicking 7 goals in each quarter while keeping the courageous Cats to only 1, to record a strong 132 point victory, 24.10-154 to 3.4-22.
Luke Ayling was best on ground with his club record 12 goals, while new recruits Ben Thomas, Jarod Thomson and John Dowl played starring roles, Chris Graf contributed well in the guts, while 17 year old wunderkind Bondi showed courage beyond his years, dominating his wing all day.
Goals- Luke Ayling 12, Steve Davidson 3, Chris Graf, Mick Yee 2, Ash Condon, Jack Pascoe, Trent Hurst, Ben Thomas, Stuart Tibben 1.
Best- Luke Ayling, Jarod Thomson, Josh Cass, John Dowl, Ben Thomas, Chris Graf.
The reserves fielded a strong team on paper, however came up against a vastly improved Cats outfit, who showed great determination once they clicked into gear. The Jets kicked the first 3 goals of the day, 2 from the boot of Chris Kyle before a knee injury stopped his day, and the Jets failed to fire after that, letting a 3 goal quarter time lead dissipate as the Cats threw everything at the home team, and if not for the game being reduced to three quarters to an injury to a Camden player just after half time, the result may have headed down the Northern Road. However, the Jets held the Cats out in the shortened last term to win by 9 points. The Jets wish the injured player all the best, and hope for a speedy recovery.
Goals- Chris Kyle, Stewart Potts 2 each, Ryan Bowen, Doug Linnett, Steve Chase 1 each.
Best- Jack Wilson, Les Cass, Doug Linnett, Steve Chase, Mat Laerence, Norm Hanley.
