John has been involved with the Magpies for over 20 years as both a player, coach and an administrator. Originally a member of the Liverpool Eagles John was one of the founding members of the Magpies after the successful merge of the Liverpool Eagles and Bankstown Bombers seniors clubs eventually playing over 150 senior games for the new identity.
In 2008 the Magpies formed their first ever Under 18's Team competing in the Sydney AFL Challenge Cup. The award for the best and fairest player in the Magpies U18's team is known as the "John Bampton Best and Fairest Trophy".
