The Wollondilly Knights AFL men’s side have secured a grand final victory and are back-to-back champions.
The top of the table clash saw the Knights take on the Pennant Hills Demons in the division three grand final on Saturday, September 10.
Club treasurer and player Russell Andrews said the grand final win was an exciting moment.
“It is the first time in the club’s history that a team has won back-to-back premierships,” he said. “The win is extra special because the team went up a division from last year and still won. The win is a tribute to the old and new guys in the side who all lifted to the occasion.”
Pennant Hills finished minor premiers with 17 wins and one loss and Wollondilly finished second with 16 wins and two losses so it was sure to be a thrilling game.
Wollondilly started well with three goals kicked in the first quarter to Pennant Hills’ three behinds. The inaccuracies cost Pennant Hills and the Knights defended strongly.
Wollondilly continued their dominance in the second quarter and pulled away from the Demons in the third quarter with a five goal lead.
Wollondilly’s Chris Wolfe took a spectacular mark on the top of two defenders’ shoulders which had supporters on their feet cheering.
Hard tackles, fierce attacks and strong defence kept the ball coming into the Knights’ forward line.
The Demons never gave up and had one last surge in the final quarter, resulting in three goals and three behinds to only two goals from the Knights.
The Knights held on for victory to comfortably win 12 3 (75) over Pennant Hills 6 9 (45).
“The side knew we were in with a chance but to be in front early on was unexpected,” Andrews said. “There was a good feeling on the field after the first half and we carried the dominant performance into the third quarter. Our defence was strong enough to get the job done.”
Captain Daniel Hockey was named best on ground.
The men were presented with medals and a trophy whilst surrounded by friends and family.
The club will now turn its focus to filling a second men’s side in division five as well as its women’s team.
