It is all down to one team in the finals series after Under 19’s, Firsts and Reserves all exited the competition on the weekend, but overall a fantastic year for the largest Western Sydney club with all teams making the finals cut.
The Ramettes head to Blacktown on Saturday to play their final game of the season when they face up to minor premiers, Gosford Wildcats, in the 2015 BLK Sydney AFL Women’s Grand Final. A fantastic achievement for a wonderful group of girls after bowing out in the preliminary final for the last two years. In what was a difficult year with many injuries and unavailability’s for most of it, the Ramettes needed to win two of their last three matches to even make the final five, eventually leapfrogging Blacktown Magic into fourth spot in what was the closest contested final five in history.
From there, it was three sudden death matches to make the big dance. They easily disposed of Blacktown Magic in the elimination final, before coming from behind in the third quarter to grab a great two point victory over UTS Shamrocks, the third year in succession eliminating that team from the finals. Last Saturday, they were to face up to the very physical Auburn Giants outfit. With a seven point lead at the end of the first term, things were on song, but the Giants fought back to lead at the end of the next two quarters. Penrith managed a crucial goal early in the final quarter as their intent got tougher, the beating drums went silent as the girls hung on tenaciously, for a sensational two point win. Other than the forty two point drubbing by Penrith over Blacktown in the first final, every other game has been decided by less than a straight kick.
It’s been a wonderful winter for the team. Two of the players, Natalie Camilleri and Nikki Perrett both representing Sydney AFL in their two series match against Canberra, whilst “Killer” Perrett gained a rare honour and first for the club with inclusion into the NSW team. Many new players of all ages have hit the scene and the enquiries for 2016 are coming in thick and fast. One of the highlight “milestones” was mother of three, Kylie Rix, donning the teal and pink guernsey. The Emu Plains / Glenmore Park Lions Auskick Manager made it a family affair, with Husband John, daughter Allanah and son Jeremy all playing for the Rams this year.
Despite some resistance by the league to admit the team into the competition back in 2012, the girls have formed a great bond and will be looking for a Penrith flag come Saturday at around 11 AM
