The wet weather round played last Saturday saw three teams compete at Greygums Oval.
The Under 19’s started the day against the very talented ladder leaders, Holroyd-Parramatta, who have recruited very well this year with the abolition of the pathway programme. The Gophers got off to a good start and maintained their lead throughout to take the points with a two goal win, from the fast finishing young Rams. Despite the loss, Penrith still maintain third spot on the ladder with Western Suburbs and the “serial victims” the only teams above them.
The following match saw the Ramettes also take on the ladder leaders, Auburn Giants. Auburn dominated the first quarter, leading by 27 points at the first break. The Ramettes showed their determination to kick four unanswered goals in the second term to get within reach of the Giants with the premiership quarter being pivotal in restricting the visitors, with a wind at their back, to a goalless twenty minutes. In a thrilling finish, the Ramettes prevailed by seven points and kept their finals dream alive. Players from both teams banded together after the final siren to show support for Adam Goodes.
The final match was the first clash of the year between Balmain and the Rams in Division Three. Balmain kicked the opening goal in the first sixty seconds, but it was the only spark of joy for the Tigers as Penrith recorded a convincing 83 point win, retaining third position on the ladder and certainly dashing Balmain’s chance for a final finish
This weekend is a monster home round for the Rams with all five games at home spread over two days. On Saturday, we welcome Southern Power in the Under 19’s and Manly in both the Women’s and Division Two men’s. Both matches are crucial with both the Ramettes currently sitting on the outer edge of finals in fifth spot and a victory needed to propel them into September football.
On Sunday, the day kicks off at 10:00 AM with Division Five playing Sydney Uni and Division Three following at Midday, also against the students. Wins should see them both maintain a top three spot as finals time looms.
Penrith Rams would like to congratulate young Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions player, Nicholas Hocking on achieving 200 club games for the lions last Sunday at Dukes Oval. It was Nick’s 11th year as a competition player (He’s on to his fifth president) and it is a magnificent achievement. Nick has also played some games for the Rams under 19’s for the last two season.
A good attendance partied till late at O’Donoghues on Saturday night, well patronised by all teams and players, families and supporters are encouraged to attend post match as well as midweek to take up their generous member offers. The club would also like to acknowledge Slater + Gordon with their recent sponsorship with full details being released in the coming week.
