The Wollondilly Knights Senior Australian Football Club won the AFL Sydney division four premiership after their 6.6 (42) to 5.6 (36) win over Macquarie University at Blacktown International Sportspark, Rooty Hill on Saturday.
The Knights were scoreless at the end of the first quarter as Timothy Cameron gave University a 2.2 (14) to 0.0 (0) lead.
Andre Stamoulos scored the Knights first goal in the second corner and helped reduced University’s lead to 2.3 (15) to 1.5 (11).
University scored the first three goals in the third quarter but the Knights recovered and trailed 5.4 (34) to 3.6 (24) as they headed into the final quarter.
Shaun Paget, Russell Andrews and David Wolfe made the most of their chances in front of goal to had the Knights a six point win.
Club president Russell Andrews said the team was ‘‘over the moon’’ to achieve a grand final victory after their grand final loss last season.
‘‘We went into this year looking at reaching the grand final again,’’ he said.
‘‘It was a tough one, a hard one from the start [and] the boys realised they were never out of it.’’
Andrews said there was ‘‘a lot of passion’’ throughout the small Knights side this season that helped them gel as a team.
‘‘[What brought us together was] I think the fact that we are a small team,’’ he said.
‘‘The boys play for each others and there is that feeling of family at the club.’’
