PENRITH RAMS U19s Match Report round 10 vs Moorebank
On a perfect day for football the young Rams came up against a rampaging and near full strength Moorebank Magpies at Greygums Oval. With several key players away the Rams thanks to the help of our junior clubs were still able to field a relatively strong side.
The first quarter and a half was a great contest but with 10 minutes to go in the second quarter the Magpies slipped into another gear and the Rams were unable to go with them. At half time due partly to the need to find better match ups in certain areas and also because a couple of players were struggling with illness or injury we were forced to shuffle the side around. In an attempt to gain some control back by locking the ball in our forward half longer we changed our game plan to a higher risk strategy.
Unfortunately at a time when the game plan was heavily reliant on retaining possession our disposal let us down and we continually turned the ball over. In the third quarter we went to a one on one strategy but the damage had been done and the Magpies once on a roll continued to attack the ball harder and run harder.
In the end the score board told the story and there has been a lot of reflection this week from players and coach. We could dismiss it as just one of those days when nothing went right and put it to the back of our minds. However the facts are that when the game got physical and the Magpies began to run harder we were soft and not prepared to match their run.
The players did not perform to expectations and as coach I certainly didn’t – putting in an absolute shocker. But we live and learn, take that one squarely on the chin and look forward to the next opportunity to redeem ourselves. It has been a great week at training with the majority of the squad training Wednesday and several players also putting in a solid session on Thursday and I fully expect our players to respond well this week.
Best players on the day where Pat Pope who was our dominant player through the midfield, Jeromy Rix who battled superbly in the ruck and across half forward and Immanuel Papageorgiou who played a great roll across half back. Kayne Quirk also did very well in the ruck around the ground, Ben Skinner was strong at full back and Luke Hyland was our best forward gathering plenty of possessions and finishing with 2 goals. Jacob Field, Zac Pianta and Joel Fisher were also prominent.
Special thanks to Under 17 players Luke Hyland (Blue Mtns), Eddy Steffen (Nepean Rams) and Jared Ryan (ST Clair) and their clubs.
This Saturday we take on the Macarthur Giants at Monarch Oval, Field St, Macquarie Fields – there is a $5 entry fee in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia.
