Ramettes Match Report Vs Moorebank Magpies.
Match report by Ramettes Kate Eashope
On a rainy, dreary Saturday, the Ramettes geared up to face the growing skills of the Moorebank girls, who from previous encounters proved to be a hard physical team. Wet weather footy was on the cards and the first quarter began with a bang, hard physical tackles, vicious shepherds and great defensive pressure. Special mentions go to Mel Hunter laying down 5 shepherds and leading the way for the girls, backed up by April Green’s continuing hunger for the ball, receiving 6 possessions in just one passage of play! There were plenty of great handballs on display with Mel “Cookie” Brydon, Nikki “Killer” Perrett, Nikki "Maui" McNeill & Nat Camilleri displaying their slick hand passing skills. By quarter time Killer had set the pace with 2 goals, putting the Rambuntious Ramettes out in front.
The second quarter saw the girls determined to shake off our “second quarter blues” by laying ferocious tackles and having a “never say die” attitude. Jana Webb displayed her growing skills by applying great pressure in the forward line chasing down her opponent, laying the smackdown and winning the ball! Julie Ashby was getting more and more involved in the forward play, offering great handballs out of tight competitions. Cookie continued her defensive effort by smothering the ball like a boss, keeping the ball within our scoring range. The forwards worked hard in the second quarter with Jessie Burnham creating many opportunities up front. Many of Jessie’s shepherds allowed the girls to have a shot at goal, her 2nd efforts creating all the momentum even chiming in with her own goal. On bated breath we all enormously welcomed our “Captain Courageous” Jen Brown back, who decided in her “Rioli like” capabilities to rove off the pack and snap herself a goal. Bruce McAvaney would of definitely called that “Delicious”. At half time the score sat at 36 to 6, Ramettes way.
The third quarter saw great defensive work by our backs, with Andrea Deighton setting up the play for our half back line, squashing all momentum Moorebank had. Andrea and Simone Halse detailed their experience of the game by playing in front of their opponents, taking marks and applying the hard pressure, proving that great defence wins games. Haley Short and Mel Howard were icing on the defensive cake, stopping their opponents and entirely removing them from the game. Up in the forward line the Captain was at it again kicking herself another goal, with Cookie chiming in with one of her own. Ashley Grosas provided solid leads from full forward all day, getting her hands on the ball every opportunity she could, backed up by Jasmine “Jazzy” Payne rattling some spines in her usual fashion. Jazzy displayed great running with the ball, feeding of Nat “Ablett Jnr” Camilleri who in her normal magical fashion seemed to be impossibly everywhere. Ablett Jnr took fancy high flying marks all day, with no regard for her safety, just head over the ball stuff, simply winning the ball all day. At three quarter time the score was 51 to 6 Ramettes way. Giddy up for the fourth!
The fourth quarter saw some shifting of positions with Bryony Corless moving down to the back line, playing in front of her opponent, taking marks and accurately dispensing the ball. Magda “The Polish Powerhouse” Bazan moved into the ruck position, after a sensational all day effort from Kayla Badger who consistently won the hit outs, accurately hitting the ball to her rovers and then applying the shepherds! The Polish Powerhouse decided to get in on all this goal kicking action, kicking her first ever goal and celebrating with gusto. Eve Pamer was once again putting in a rock solid performance in the forward line, never making it easy for the Moorebank defence, her spirit and determination is something that all the Ramettes should strive to achieve as her attitude is faultless and truly inspirational. Special mentions go to courageous Linda McCarthey who injured her ankle during the course of the game, but not before applying some great tackles and second efforts in the forward line. Grosas, who had been solid all day at full forward, took a spectacular over the head mark, finally kicked a great goal and adding to the tally, setting the final score at 8-17-65 to 1-36-9, Ramettes way.
Green was definitely a standout, making one percenters all day, calling upon Hawthorn legend John Kennedy’s famous speech “Don’t think, Do”! the back line should be commended for their fabulous defensive work, “ALL DAY SIR”, never allowing easy goals to Moorebank, perfectly complimenting our rovers, pushing the ball up forward.
The girls sang the team song with pride and fierce passion, as we are all proud to call ourselves The Mighty Ramettes. Sitting on the sideline was not an easy task for me but it has given me a great appreciation for how far we have come and the awesomeness for which we are headed! We love football through and through, our passion cannot be denied and our hunger will propel us forward. Great job ladies!
