Welcome to the seventh edition of Ramstats, covering the weird, wonderful and sometimes wacky world of the statistics and history of the Penrith Rams AFC.
This edition covers games played on 17th/18th May:
1. Under 19s (U19s Div 2) v Macarthur Giants - Rd 6
2. Third Grade (Div 5) v Camden - Rd 7
3. Ramettes (Ladies Div 2) v UNSW/ES Stingrays - Rd 6
4. Seniors (Div 1) v UNSW/ES - Rd 7
5. Reserves (Div 3) v Nor-West Jets - Rd 7
NB (1): Age Grade refers to combined Under 18/19/20 matches.
NB (2): Quarter by quarter and goalkicking records only exist from 1990 onwards.
NB (3): History v Club records can vary markedly in nature due to the fact that, since 2009, many clubs do not play each other on the same level.

SCORING & MARGINS
SCORING
* Senior Grade's score of 5.12 (42) was the 13th 42 point score in the history of the club (5 by 5.12, 8 by 6.6). The Rams have never won with this score, but this occasion (a 3 point loss) is the closest the club has come to winning by quite some way. The most recent time the club had kicked this score prior to this round was in 2013 when Reserve Grade went down to Randwick at Pioneers "Where The Wind Never Stops" Park. Its first two instances were memorable in different ways. It first occurred in 1984 when Senior Grade went down to Parramatta at Hyland Road Park by 217 points - Parramatta kicking 39.25 (259). The next instance was in 1989, when Senior Grade again suffered a huge loss at the hands of Auburn in Round 3 at Bargo Showground (the game being transferred due to rain) - the Rams going down 6.6 (42) to 30.20 (200). However this result mattered little in the Grand Final that season, when Penirth downed Auburn by 51 points to win their first flag.
* Reserve Grade's score of 6.9 (45) was the 14th score of 45 points in the history of the club (12 by 6,9, 2 by 7.3). Its first instance was in 1984 at Colbee Park when Reserve Grade lost to Hawkesbury. The Rams have actually won 4 times with this score - including the most recent two occasions it was scored, when the Ramettes won with 45 points in consecutive weeks in 2013 (against Randwick - their first ever win, by 42 points - and then Auburn). The other two times the club won with 45 points were also enormously significant - the Under 18s won the 2001 Second Semi-Final against Manly at Gipps Road on the way to winning the flag - and the Under 18s won the Grand Final against Wollongong at Kelso Park to again take out the flag the very next season. Reserve Grade's loss by six points this round was the narrowest loss the club has experienced when scoring 45 points.
* Third Grade's score of 7.13 (55) was the 16th 55 point score in the history of the club (7 by 7.13, 9 by 8.7). The score was first kicked by Senior Grade against Hawkesbury at Sales Park in 1984. Senior Grade also kicked the most recent instance, before this round, against Pennant Hills at Mike Kenny Oval in windy conditions last season. The Rams have actually won six times with this score, including the last three times it has occurred - this match, Senior Grade's match against Pennant Hills last season (already mentioned) and the Under 18s' sensational win against Parramatta at Greygums, also last season.
* The Ramettes kicked 77 points, the 11th instance of this score in Rams history (4 by 10.17, 5.by 11.11, 2 by 12.5). This score has been a pretty good performer for the Rams, winning 8 times. The Ramettes 65 point win was easily the highest ever winning margin with a score of 77 points, the previous best being 45 points by Senior Grade against Pennant Hills at Greygums in 2012. 77 points was first recorded by Reserve Grade against Sydney Uni at McGrath's Hill in 1981, and before this instance it was most recently scored by Reserve Grade against Gosford at Kelso Park earlier this season (with an identical goals behinds tally as the Ramettes in this round - 10.17).
WINNING MARGINS
* Third Grade's 12 point win was the 9th by the club (3 by Senior Grade, 4 by Reserve Grade, 1 by Third Grade and 1 by Age Grade). The margin has bookended the club's history - it first occurred in the first season, 1981, when Reserve Grade defeated Bankstown Sports at McGrath's Hill and most recently had occurred last season when Senior Grade defeated UTS at Greygums Oval.
* The Ramette's 65 point win is only the 4th win by that margin by the club (1 by Senior Grade, 2 by The Ramettes and 2 by Age Grade). It first occurred in 1993, when Senior Grade defeated Bargo at Greygums Oval (kicking 14.25 in the process!) and most recently, before this round, in 2008, when the Under 18s defeated Moorebank at Greygums Oval. The Ramettes' score of 10.17 (77) is the lowest score kicked to record a 65 point win for the club.
VENUES
* The Rams have played 475 games at Greygums Oval, after first playing there in 1987. Our record there is 217 wins, 256 losses and 2 draws - with 9 abandoned.. In addition, the Rams have won another 34 games there by forfeit. Last week I advised the Rams' highest score at Greygums - by Senior Grade - 50.33 (333) vs Blacktown in 1994. This week it's Reserve Grade's turn - their highest at Greygums is 29.13 (187) vs Parramatta in 2006, with Jason Ware kicking 14 goals.
TEAMS
SENIOR GRADE
* This is the Rams' 9th season against UNSW/ES in Senior Grade, starting in 2000..UNSW/ES is a merged club between the Uni of NSW and East Sydney clubs, the merger occurring prior to the 2000 season. Before that, the Rams senior grade played Uni of NSW for 10 seasons, spanning 1983 - 1999. The Rams never competed against the old East Sydney club in senior football. The playing record against UNSW/ES sits at 5 wins, 10 losses - with one match abandoned.
* This loss extends Senior Grade's current losing streak against UNSW/ES to three matches - those losses being 3 points, 13 points and 3 points again.
* 6.9 (45) is the lowest score UNSW/ES has kicked to defeat the Rams' Senior Grade.
* The Rams have competed against UNSW/ES in all five grades.
RESERVE GRADE
* This is Reserve Grade's 25th season against Nor-West Jets (fomerly Hawkesbury), the two clubs first meeting in the 1983 season (the mighty Rams' first year of having two senior grades). The only club that Ressies have played more seasons against is Mac Uni (26), while they have also played 25 seasons against Southern Power (formerly Southern Sharks, Sutherland).
* Reserve Grade's record against Nor-West Jets now stands at 25 wins (including 4 by forfeit) and 27 losses, with one abandoned.
* 7.9 (51) is the lowest score Nor-West Jets have kicked to defeat the Rams' Reserve Grade. The previous lowest was 8.8 (56) in 2004 at Bensons Lane.
* Reserve Grade has kicked 3095 points against Nor-West Jets - the second most "points for" against any club (behind Mac Uni on 3431 points).
* The Rams have now lost their last three matches (on each occasion finishing with a final tally of 6 goals) against Nor-West Jets, after winning their previous four matches.
THIRD GRADE
* Third Grade is now in its third season against Camden, the two clubs competing for the first time in 2012.
* The Rams' Third Grade won its first game against Camden in its fifth attempt.
* After losing its first four games against Camden by 77, 43, 64 and 103 points, this win - despite being by 12 points - lifts the Rams' percentage against Camden from 32.15 to 40.99.
* Despite winning, this was not the Rams' highest score against Camden. That was 9.6 (60) in the two clubs' first meeting.
* Conversely, this was easily Camden's lowest score against Penrith Third Grade. Their previous lowest score was 12.8 (80).
* The Rams have competed against Camden in all four male grades.
* This win has already equalled the most wins in a season by Third Grade (five) since returning to competition in 2012.
UNDER 19s
* This was supposed to be the first clash between Penrith and the Macarthur Giants, now treated as a forfeit due to the Giants not being able to field a legal (ie 14 players) lineup.
* The Giants are a combined Camden/Campbelltown Under 19 side - the Rams have played both those clubs separately in the past in Age Grade football.
* The Rams have (already) won more games this season in Under 19s since 2010 (the Under 18s' undefeated premiership season).
* This is the 24th time a Penrith Age Grade side has been forfeited against (more than an entire season). In contrast, Rams Age Grade sides have forfeited on 7 occasions.
* For the information of players, etc - all players scheduled to play on the day will receive a game in club records. (This is because, as opposed to a forfeit advised in advance, the players turned up and were ready to play a game). However, as the match that proceeded was unofficial, the goalkicking and scoring records from that match will not be included in club records.
RAMETTES
- The Ramettes enter their second season against the UNSW/ES club, having first played them in 2012 (whilst this is their second season against UNSW/ES, it is their first season against the newly formed second UNSW/ES side).
* The record now stands at one loss against the UNSW/ES “first” side and one win against the UNSW/ES “second” side
* The Ramettes have now pushed their points per game average over their entire history to over 30 (30.86) and their overall percentage since inception to over 50 (50.33).
* Their score in this match 10.17 (77) just fell short of their all-time record score – 11.13 (79).
* The Ramettes’ opening quarter of 4.6 (30) is their best ever first term and their second-best quarter of all time. Their second quarter of 3.4 (22) equals their best ever second term.
GENERAL
* Penrith played 5 games at Greygums over the one weekend for the 5th time.
* The Macarthur Giants' forfeit against the Under 19s was the 54th time a club has forfeited against the Rams, as follows:
Senior Grade - 8
Reserve Grade - 20
Third Grade - 2
Age Grade - 24
(There was one particularly memorable day at the end of the 1995 season when Bankstown turned up at Greygums and forfeited their Reserve Grade game due to lack of numbers. They then forfeited their Senior Grade game due to lack of numbers as well).
* On the other hand, the Rams have forfeited 16 games in total over their entire existence. For a club which has punched considerably above its weight for much of its existence, this is a remarkably low number.
