The Penrith Rams secured a finals berth in their first season in Division One with a hard-fought 20 point victory over North Shore at Greygums Oval. With the Bombers sitting two games behind in sixth place, a win was vital for both clubs, who were greeted by difficult conditions with a strong wind blowing directly across the ground. North Shore started the stronger as they lead by a goal at the first change. From here though the Rams slowly got on top, keeping the visitors to just one more goal for the afternoon to record an important win.
Dale Chivas was outstanding as he willed himself to contest after contest, with the backline headed by Jay Edwards and Nathan Wright repelling everything the Bombers could throw at them. Kavera Carr and James Yates played strongly, with Jake Pianta providing a focal point to kick three vital goals in a low scoring affair.
The reserves continued on their winning ways with an 86 point win over the Bombers in Division Four. The Rams flew out of the blocks with seven unanswered first quarter goals before the match degenerated into a scrappy affair in the windy conditions. Tayt Corless was in fine form up forward to finish with six goals, and he received great support from Lachlan Geeves, Chris Manuel and Lachie Smith.
Division Five made it three senior wins for the day with a 21 point victory over UNSW/ES. The match was won in the first term as the Rams took a 20 point quarter time lead, and they were able to close the contest out with a determined four quarter display. Michael Brown, Michael Bishop and Ben Priest were Penrith’s best, with Jason “Jabba” Bradley wrapping up the goalkicking award with four majors.
The U/18’s continued their late season improvement despite going down by 52 points to third placed Sydney Uni. The Rams were right in the contest all day, trailing by just 19 points at the final change, before the Students were able to run away in the final term. Eight players from this team made appearances in the Division One side at different stages throughout the year, and this will hold the club in great stead for the future. With the majority of players still eligible for at least one more season at underage level, the boys should be more than competitive in 2013.
This week sees the seniors travel to face second-placed Southern Power in the final home and away game of the season. The Rams will be keen to put in a strong performance and show that they can cause some headaches come finals time. The reserves kick-off their finals campaign in Division Four as they face UTS, whilst the U/18’s finish their season away to St.George.
The club would like to acknowledge the continued support in 2012 of our wonderful sponsors, IGA Signature, Ice Break Ice Coffee, the Red Cow Inn, Freestyle Barber Shop and Mr Taxman.
