RAMETTES
The opening game of the day was the much awaited clash between the UTS Shamrocks and the Ramettes, with both sides looking to open their winning account for the 2012 season. Slippery conditions prevailed, which made handling a greasy football difficult for both sides.
The opening term saw the visitors with the majority of the play in their forward half, but the Ramettes defence held firm through dogged, determined play. The Rams were able to venture forward on occasions, resulting in a single behind. But, with UTS only scoring two behinds, it was an open game.
Both sides were finding it difficult to get the ball out of congested situations, so there wasn't much in the way of open or flowing play. Despite this, UTS managed to get two majors on the board in the second term, whilst the Ramettes' forays forward still only managed minor scores. In a low scoring game, the Shamrocks' 13 point lead at half-time was significant.
The lead blew out to 22 points at the final break, after UTS had the better of the third term. However, the Ramettes' confidence to get back in the game was still very much there at the three-quarter time huddle. The confidence was repaid with Kate Easthope scoring the Ramettes' first major, but UTS managed a goal of their own in what was the most even quarter of the game.
The entire Ramettes side displayed their usual determination right to the very end, but found themselves outmatched by a more experienced UTS outfit. The defence, led by Claire Manuel, performed magnificently the entire game, while Nat Camilleri ran all day and seemed to be everywhere.
It was good to see plenty of support for the girls whilst, in turn, thanks to a number of the girls who stayed back and followed the Div 5 and Div 4 games.

THIRDS (DIV 5)
The thirds put up a competitive effort, pushing their higher placed opponents at various stages through the match, but not being able to put it together for the full four quarters. The Rams were definitely in it after an even opening term, but needed to continue that form into the second quarter. However they couldn't, with Camden kicking four goals while keeping the home side scoreless.
The 40 point half-time deficit didn't deter the Rams lads though, as they put in a solid third term to get within 25 points at the final break. The first goal of the final term, with the majority of the attacking play early on, got the boys to within three kicks and the sniff of an unlikely victory. However, that was the end of the resistance and the visitors kicked away with the final four majors of the match.
Jason Bradley kicked all five goals for Penrith, and Stu Ayres played well when moved onto the ball. Newcomers Cameron Wallace and Ricky Land also featured among the best.

RESERVES (DIV 4)
The Rams faced a daunting task in taking on the competition leaders UTS. Slippery conditions, further exacerbated by rain during the game, made for a tighter contest than would possibly be expected in fine weather.
The signs didn't look good for the Rams in the opening term, remaining scoreless whilst the inaccurate UTS dominated the play. The side was lucky to be only 11 points in arrears at the first change, but the game became a far closer contest from that point on.
Both defences were on top as the ball rebounded between half-forward lines. Neither side was able to get a clear break in a very low scoring contest, with less than a kick separating them at the major break and also three-quarter time.
A thrilling final quarter ensued. With the arm wrestle continuing, the Rams finally hit the front. Unfortunately for the home side though, they let their defences down, allowing UTS three goals in a heartbeat, a decisive period of play which determined the match.
It was disappointing to lose by the best part of three kicks after fighting so hard. The final margin was hardly indicative of what had preceded. Everyone battled well, with Luke Burcher named best and young Harry Doyle doing well, playing up from the Under 18s.
