Round 8 sees the Rams means teams at home with a big four matches to be contested.
Third grade start off the day’s proceedings as they kick the dew off Greygums with an 8:30 bounce against competition leaders, UTS Bats. Two weeks ago, the team suffered a heartbreaking three point loss to fellow cellar dwellers, Holroyd-Parramatta at Gipps Road and the future was looking rather grim. However, last week they produced a huge form reversal in handing out a 93 point hiding to Mac Uni in registering their first win of the year. The side will be strengthened this week with four new recruits joining the club on Tuesday and are expecting to field a full squad. The teams met earlier in the season at Mahoney Park where the Rams were unable to match the high flying Bats, but Greygums has been a graveyard for UTS in recent years and a close encounter is expected.

The 10:30 AM match that follows is one of the “big events” of the day with the fifth running of the “Riff-RAAF” Cup. The local derby between Penrith and Nor-West Jets is always a physical contest with no love lost between the sides. The cup is yet to spend time in the Bensons Lane clubhouse and Bottrill and Whites warriors intend to keep that intact. The team has recorded 12 + goal wins in their last three outings, albeit against lower placed teams whilst a good run by the Jets was stopped in its tracks last week with their home loss to Manly Wolves. It’s not understood if colourful Jets coach, Peter Kyle ran his team dead last start in order to get some odds about their chances but Nor-West will be frothing at the bit to stay in finals contention, being a spot outside the five. Both teams met in Round 1 at Bensons Lane with the Rams tasting cup victory with an 82 point victory.

It’s been a tough year for the 18’s in Sydney’s top tier competition and the 12:30 game is no exception when they face up to competition leaders, Sydney Hills Eagles. The strong NEAFL clubs colts have been a force in Sydney for many years and other than Grand Final day, take everything before them. The young Rams have suffered some heavy defeats this year, but continue to show resolve every week. Coaches Dave Nolan and Dario Falchi will be looking for a solid performance from the boys whilst head coach will be running the game through his head as he lazes on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

Sydney Hills Eagles Div One side also makes the trip to the west when they take on third placed Penrith in the 2:30 final fixture of the day. The Rams secured an unconvincing last minute win last Sunday against Pennant Hills at Mike Kenny Oval and previously accounted for UTS at Greygums. After a good start against the Demons, they took their feet off the pedal and will not be able to afford the same scenario against the poachers who are coming off the bye. Prior to that they went down fighting in a 14 point loss to Holroyd but won their previous match against North Shore that has them above Pennant Hills on the ladder. It’s a match that Penrith will go in favourites, but a big improvement is needed if they are to prove the bookmaker’s analysis correct.

On Sunday, the girls head to Taren Point to take on Southern Power in the midday clash. The teams have met just once. Back in March, the Ramettes played their first ever game in a trial against the Power at Greygums. With little or no experience of the game, it was the visitors that prevailed in a 70 point win. The Ramettes have formed a very close bond since that day and are showing improvement in leaps and bounds every week despite being unable to belt out their song to date. Last week they showed guts and courage against a star-studded Newtown outfit and are looking forward to this clash. Last week Southern Power suffered a shock 5 goal defeat at Gwawley Park against the much improved Mac Uni Warriors but have good wins against Auburn and UTS on their resume. They go into the game as the favoured side but can expect no peace from the western wonder gals.
TEAM TBA
All Rams supporters are encouraged to get to either or both venues to cheer on the teams. Players and supporters are welcome back at the Red Cow Inn Saturday night. Let's get a good crowd back there !
