Five big games this weekend as the 2012 competition swings into action. The Under 18's kick off the day at Midday when they travel to Picken Oval to take on Western Suburbs Magpies in what should be a good contest. The Rams have suffered two heavy defeats so far this year at the hands of finals contenders North Shore and Uni NSW. What the young team lacks in size they make up in comimitment. Last week against Uni NSW, they were no match early against a tall and well drilled Bulldogs team, but kept going to the end after losing key player Liam Davey to a sickening injury in the opening minutes. Despite Liam looking at a lengthy spell on the sideline, the upside is that two new players joined the team this week. Tall and talented former Blue Mountains player, Brad Camilleri joins the team as does Emu Plains/Glenmore Park junior Luke Woodworth and both are expected to add strength to the team. The Magpies are coming off a bye last week. They were no match for Sydney Hills Eagles in round 1 but put up a better display when defeated by 2011 premiers, Riverview in their Round 2 clash. The game is expected to be a physical contest with both teams searching for their first win of the season.
The following game at Picken sees the Div 1 side looking for consecutive wins against Wests. The narrow 7 point win last week against the Dogs followed their 1 point loss to Mac Uni. Matt Gann, Jake Pianta and Luke Jones return to the side in what is expected to be another hard encounter. Wests were easily accounted for by ladder frontrunners UTS in their last match and also fell to Sydney Hills Eagles in round 1. They come off last weeks bye and are looking for their maiden 2012 victory against the Rams, whose win last week propelled them into 4th spot on the ladder. The game starts at 2:10 PM
Meanwhile, reserve grade take the road trip to Adcock Park, Gosford to take on the Wildcats in the 2 v 3 Div 4 clash. The new Gosford side has been impressive in their opening games, securing a 10 goal win in their debut game against North Shore. The following week saw them fall to competition leaders UTS at home, but they bounced back last week at Blacktown to post another 10 goal victory. They will be primed to win their first home game against the Rams, who fell away in the final quarter last week in their first loss of the year to Uni NSW. Penrith will be buoyed by the retun of Matt Payne, Cam Butler and Jake Shelley to the side as they attempt to return to the winners stall in the 1 PM match which will be preceded by an Anzac Day tribute.
On Sunday, two matches are scheduled for the picturesque Dukes Oval at Emu Plains. The Ramettes start the day at 11 AM when they face up to Uni NSW Stingrays. After a great effort last week in their opening clash with Auburn at Monarch Oval, a full squad of 24 have been named on Sunday. The Ramettes suffer the loss of two key players, Vanessa Geisler and Stephanie Kostic. Three new players were welcomed to the team this week. Sharon Braddish, an ex-rugby player who has just retutrned form a long stint in the UK, Claire Manuel making another "brother/sister" Penrith combination and Rachael Eldridge. The Stingrays posted an opening round 25 point win against Southern Power at Mahoney Park and last week were certainly not disgraced in their 8 goal loss to premiership favourites, Balmain. The Ramettes trained very well with big numbers on Wednesday despite the public holiday and will be out to show their opponents they have not just joined the competition to make up numbers.
The final match sees Penrith's third grade team take on old rivals Moorebank in the 1 PM game at Dukes Oval. The Rams are looking for their first win of the year after losses to Moorebank and last week to a polished UTS outfit at Mahoney Park. Moorebank started the season with a loss to Saints but rebounded the following game when they scored a massive 115 point win over a hapless Holroyd-Parramatta in round 2. Last week, they fell by 40 points to 2012 surprise packets, Camden. A full squad has been selected for this match which should produce some vintage play fron many experienced players.
