Match Preview
The 18's kick of the day at Greygums Oval on Saturday when they play St George and will be looking for a long-awaited win. St George are just one spot ahead of the Rams after some indifferent form of late. Last week they suffered a 74 point loss to a revitalised Illawarra side at Olds Park after a draw with Uni NSW Bulldogs the week before. A 56 point win over Western Suburbs in Round 10 was full of merit and the previous week they held the Rams in contempt with a 73 point victory at Old Park in the deferred Round 4 match.
Penrith have been unable to belt out the club song since the home win against the high flying Riverview outfit. Last week they fell to Uni NSW in a high scoring match where a slow start saw them face an uphill battle throughout the match. Previously they went down by about four goals to both Western Suburbs and Pennant Hills. The side has the ammunition to win this important match that would keep them out of the relegation zone and a win would immensly help the Rams chances in the club championships.
First Grade take the field at 2:10 PM for their final home game against St George. With just games remaining, the side would need to win both to take out the minor premiership. Penrith had little trouble getting over the top of the Dragons on June 11 in the deferred round 4 match at Olds Park. The 88 point victory was full of merit and the team has only suffered a single loss since that game. The dragons are sitting in eighth spot with five wins for the season. They had four more scoring shots last week in their heartbreaking one point loss to the high flying second placed Goannas at Gipps Rd last week and will come out ready to play. Their loss last week was their fourth on the trot since a one point win against Manly in Round 10.
Penrith will be at almost full strength this week with vice-captain Dale Chivas and Mitch Reinhard expected to return to the side. The side put in a huge effort last week in their win over Sydney Uni and are yet to taste defeat this year at Greygums Oval in their swansong match at home. The win was their fourth on the trot since the loss to the Goannas. The Rams are confident of ending the home and away season with victories but will need to be wary of their opponents who would love nothing more than knocking over the leading side as their season comes to an end.
Reserve Grade take the arduous trek to Trumper Park for the midday game against the UTS Bats and are looking to bounce back after last week's disappointing loss to Mac Uni at home. The team is destined to be runner-up in the minor premiership battle after a lethargic showing last week, going down by nine points to the Warriors after grabbing the lead going into the final term. The third placed Bats were stunned last week by Auburn in a shock loss but it was reported that over half their club was interupted by unavailabilities last week and a strong team is expected back on deck. The Bats had won their previous two matches but fell to the Rams in Round 12 by 57 points. Penrith played below their best last week in only their second game in a month and a brighter showing is expected with players fighting for a finals berth. The defeat broke an eight match winning streak by the Rams and they are looking for a history making twelvth win on Saturday. However, the Bats grow and extra leg or two at home and Penrith will need to shake off the rust with the finals series commencing in just three weeks time.
Rams supporters and AFL lovers are invited to attend this week's matches and cheer on the local boys.
