Match Preview
Penrith Rams senior grades are both flying high at the top of their respective ladders and there is nothing more motivating for their opponents to knock off the top teams.
Auburn Tigers will be attempting to do this on Saturday at Mona Park in what is expected to be tough and physical encounters. Reserve Grade commence the day at midday with the Rams taking on bottom placed Auburn. The Tigers share a pretty similar record to their Victorian counterparts but have been known to spring the odd upset. In their last match they tasted their second win of the season with a 33 point win over Uni NSW Bulldogs. Prior to that, they were competitive against Moorebank and Holroyd-Parramatta and also posted a win against Nor-West in round 8. The Tigers only two wins have been at Mona Park and with many first year players in the side, are a team on the improve.
Penrith made easy work of Auburn back in May with a 124 point win but will need to be on the top of their game with a very different side to that of recent games. The Rams shot to the top of the table last week in posting their eighth successive win and their eleventh of the season. Another win will see them record their best season for almost 30 years.
First Grade take the field at 2:10 PM against fifth placed Auburn in what should be a brutal battle. The Tigers are clinging on to the last finals spot with Nor-West Jets hot on their heels. Last week they accounted for Balmain by 42 points at Drummoyne Oval to post their third successive win after defeating St George and Nor-West. They also have had a win over Sydney Uni at Mona Park and will be looking to erase the 49 point defeat by the Rams in Round 7 at Greygums Oval.
Penrith will certainly miss the services of Dale Chivas and Jimmy Denton but again with great depth this year, have worthy replacements. Under 18’s star, Jack Ponton, plays his inaugural first game match and is expecting a big game on debut. The Rams are looking for their fifth successive win and nine from their last ten against the Tigers. With their only three losses for the season at away grounds, Penrith will need to heavily focus on this game to keep their position at the top of the table.
The Under 18’s have a week off before they face Uni NSW/ES Bulldogs next week at Village Green.
