Week 1 – 28/29 August, 2010 (Seniors First Semi-Final; U18s Second Semi-Final)
General
* This was the first finals series for a Penrith Senior Grade side since 2005. On the last three occasions the side made the finals, it finished either fourth or fifth and played in the Elimination Final. This was the first occasion a Penrith Senior Grade side has finished better than fourth on the ladder since 1992, when the side finished second.
* This was the second successive finals series for the Penrith Under 18 side. It was the first time since 2002 since the side had played in a Second-Semi Final.
Players
* Ben McGovern’s 10 goals was a record for a Penrith player in a final. The previous record of 9 was held jointly by Mick Campbell (1989 First Sem-Final), Gavin Chalker (1991 Grand Final) and Dave Armstrong (1994 Elimination Final), all in Senior Grade.
* Ben’s 10 goals means he has now kicked 10 or more goals in a game for Penrith three times. He is only the second player to achieve this. Michael Ross holds the record of four – 15, 13, 10 & 10 – achieved in the Under 18s over the 2001 & 2002 seasons.
* Blake Roberts kicked two goals in Senior Grade to take his season’s (and career, as this is his debut year) tally in that grade past 50.
Teams
* For the second week running, Senior Grade kicked an eight goal final term to over-run the Southern Power. Unlike the previous week, this week’s last quarter effort fell just short of the previous three quarters - 8.4 (52) to the previous three terms 7.11 (53). The quarter was Senior Grade’s second best for the season, the best being 9.1 (55) vs Holroyd-Parramatta in Round 17, however it was Senior Grade’s record quarter for a finals match (since records are available from 1990) – the previous best being 8.2 (50) in the 1991 Second Semi-Final vs Hawkesbury.
* Senior Grade won its third game on the trot against the Southern Power (15/5/10 – 29/8/10), its second best winning run against that club. That is well behind its best winning run, 7 games, from 15/05/99 - 22/06/02.
* Senior Grade’s points for against the Southern Power are now 2931, bettering the points against Blacktown (2923), making its points against Power outright second – well behind the Nor-West Jets (5236).
* Penrith Under 18 grade kicked its all-time record score, 32.15 (207). It bettered its previous best by a single point – 31.20 (206) kicked on 7th July, 2001 vs Nor-West Jets. The score is the 15th all-time best by a Penrith side and the first time any Penrith side has kicked that particular score (207).
* The Under 18 winning margin of 185 points was the second highest by an Under 18 side (the best occurring in the 2001 match, where the Jets were held scoreless, making Penrith winners by 206 points). It was also the first time any Penrith side had won a match by that margin.
* The Under 18 score was a record for any Penrith side in a finals match. The previous record was 25.12 (162) by the all-conquering Penrith Senior Grade side in the 1991 Second Semi-Final vs Hawkesbury.
* The winning margin of 185 points was obviously also a record for any Penrith side in a finals match.
* The Under 18 score and winning margin was also the best by any Penrith side in 2010.
* The Under 18 opening quarter of 10.4 (64) was a season’s best for any Penrith grade in 2010. Since quarter by quarter records have been available (1990), it is the best Penrith quarter in any finals match, beating the Under 18s’ own record of 10.2 (62) in the 2009 First Semi-Final vs Moorebank Sports. It is also the Under 18s second best all-time quarter, behind the 11.7 (73) scored in the final term against Balmain in 2003.
* Under 18 Grade won its fourth game on the trot against the Southern Power (17/4/10 – 28/8/10), its second best winning run against that club. That is well behind its best winning run, 11 games, from 24/05/03 - 28/06/08.
* Under 18’s score and winning margin was obviously its highest against the Power. It took its points for
against the Power to 2719, miles and away the most against any opponent, and also recorded its 15th win against that club, also the most against any opponent.
Week 2 – 4th September, 2010 (Seniors Preliminary Final)
General
* This was the first time Senior Grade has played in a Preliminary Final since 1992, when it defeated Bargo Knights at Macquarie Fields.
Players
* Congratulations to David Bradley on playing his 50th Senior Grade game for Penrith. Dave broke an interesting record, taking the longest time to achieve this milestone for Penrith – some 12 seasons after his debut for the club in 1998.
Teams
* Senior Grade’s win against UTS was its first against that club since 7th July, 2001 – the first time the two clubs met. Since then the Rams had lost 16 consecutive games against that club.
* Senior Grade’s score and winning margin were its best against UTS.
Week 3 – 11th September, 2010 (Seniors & Under 18s Grand Finals)
General
* This was Senior Grade’s first appearance in a Grand Final since 5th September, 1993, when the Rams went down to Hawkesbury by 33 points at Whalan Reserve.
* This was Under 18 Grade’s first Grand Final appearance since 14th September, 2002, when the Rams prevailed over Wollongong by 18 points at Kelso Park.
Players
* Ben McGovern kicked five goals – meaning he ended up season 2010 with 99 goals for the club. He kicked 2 goals in Senior Grade, 3 goals in Reserve Grade and 94 goals in Under 18 Grade. This is the second most goals kicked in a season for the Rams, behind Tom Hall’s 126 goals in 1982.
Teams
* This was Senior Grade’s seventh appearance in a Grand Final, with a return of 2 wins (1989, 1991) and 5 losses (1987, 1988, 1992, 1993 and now 2011). It was the club’s third loss against Moorebank Sports (formerly Liverpool), having previously lost the 1987 & 1988 Grand Finals against them.
* This was Under 18 Grade’s third appearance in a Grand Final, with a return of 3 from 3. The previous wins came in 2001 and 2002.
* Surprisingly, the Under 18 Grand Final saw neither the highest score kicked by an Under 18 side in a Grand Final nor the lowest score kicked against it. The first honour belongs to the Penrith 1991 Senior Grade side, which kicked 22.17 (149) in its thumping of Hawkesbury. The second “honour” jointly belongs to Manly-Warringah in the 2001 Under 18 Grade Grand Final, 4.3 (27) and Wollongong in the 2002 Under 18 Grade Grand Final, 3.9 (27).
* The Under 18 Grade premiership win was the fifth in the club’s history.
* Under 18 Grade took its record against Holroyd-Parramatta in that grade to 8 wins out of 8 attempts.
