The formal evening got underway at 7:30 PM at the Penrith Paceway with MC Michael Haynes introducing Chairman Kevin Tate who congratulated the players, committee, families and supporters on their involvement with the fantastic year with the success achieved. Kevin thanked representatives of our major sponsors and presented framed jerseys to IGA, Col Innes (Parmalat/IceBreak) and Darryl Brown (SPC/Goulburn Valley) who along with the Red Cow Inn and MD Brick were magnificent in their support this year.
As the three course meal was served, the awards got underway with appreciation awards given to all coaches and managers. Milestone recognition awards were named with 200 gamers Daniel Barnes and David Cummings received framed photo's to recognise their achievements whilst Jason Ware (300 games) received the signed match ball in a display unit. A huge cheer greeted Mark Woodford as he was awarded the Best First Year Player Award. The extremely popular Woody later disclosed his big regret was he wished that he hadn't waited 29 years to play his first game of AFL.
After acknowledging the unique trifecta of Medal winners at the Sydney AFL Awards held at Doltone House last month with Lachie Smith, Jason Ware and Matthew Payne taking the coveted awards, the night progressed quickly with nominations for the Dianne Guymer Memorial Club Person of the year. Nominated were Susan Scarborough, Mark Steunenberg (nominated despite his support of Collingwood) Paula Murphy, Cheryl Payne, Josh Anasis and the eventual winner Kevin Priest. The club wishes to thank all those people and others who helped out so well during the year.
After presenting the premiership Under 18's players with their suitably inscribed jeseys, it was a short dinner break before the major vote count for all grades commenced.
In a closely fought battle in Under 18's, Matthew Payne come up trumps by a single vote to Adam Sharp for the Alan Stewart Medal to add this accolade to his Sydney AFL Hart Medal awarded in September. Both players are expected to play a big part in the future of the club as they move to senior football in 2011
Reserve Grade saw popular player and prolific photographer, Christian Triffitt run away in the last few matches to take the Geoff Eldering Medal from runner up Justin Weller. The Rams were pleased that Geoff attended the evening to make the presentation to the Penrith flanker.
The major award of the evening saw a tense battle throughout. It all came down to the last round where Dave Bradley scored a point and was countered by captain Lachie Smith who received three votes. With the judges unable to split the pair, club legend Michael Walker announced the tie and presented the co-medallists with their awards. Lachie Smith related that due his move out of the area to just a drop punt away from the North Shore Bombers ground at Gore Hill, he was almost about to leave his beloved Rams after a ten year stint, but recognised the spark was returning after attending the pre-season opening day and the passionate captain's decision was vindicated with the season culminating in a grand final appearance. Dave Bradley then took to the mike to congratulate the team on their great season. "Braddles" was certainly an inspiration to the younger players this season as he never left anything on the field in each of his games.
After all formalities were finalised, the crowd were entertained by rock band "Dirty Little Thing" as the evening went well into the late hours. A special mention goes to Nathan White and Jason Makin who shared the honours on the dance floor with their stunning moves.
A great night had by all to finish of a great year for the Rams with a gentle reminder that pre-season training is due to commence in just over a month.. 2011 is sure looking fine.
