Penrith face an enormous task first up in the 2010 competition when they face up to last years undefeated premiers, Sydney Uni, at Greygums Oval on Saturday April 10. Uni last tasted defeat in the 2008 Grand Final before going one step further in 2009. Buoyed by a trial win last week against Orange, the Rams are looking for a rare win against the students in their opening match.
A new youth infused side is expected to be selected for the match. Newcomers Blake Edwards, Mark Woodford and Tim Cummins along with 2009 18's players Ben Robinson, Mitch Reinhard and Kyle McDonagh all vying for selection which will be announced on Friday. Although many lacking experience at senior level, the selected team is expected to perform well after a stellar pre-season.
The reserves also face a tough essay when they face Uni NSW/ES Bulldogs in the 12:00 PM curtainraiser. With Daniel Barnes leading the team of seasoned performers along with some new players to the game, it promises to be an interesting and hard fought affair under the coaching of Mark Jackson. The Bulldogs will, like all university sides, be the benchmark of the competition this year. The 2009 Grand Finalsits accounted for the Rams by 42 points in last year's encounter at home whilst the Rams were forced to forfeit in their second clash. Fitness and numbers were the downfall of the side last year but with a much larger pool and an intense training regime this year, the side should be very competitive.
Unfortunately, the Under 18's have the bye in round 1 with the late withdrawal of Riverview from the competition. They will have to wait an extra week before facing up to last years Grand Finalists, Southern Power at Monarch Oval on Saturday April 17. Again with good numbers, the team is expected to perform well under the guidance of premiership winning coaches, Craig Sharp and Geoff Payne.
The reserve grade fixture kicks off at 12:00 PM with the firsts taking to the field at 2:10 PM at Greygums Oval. Families, friends and supporters are urged to come along and support the local team.
