Coming off two wins against local clubs, the Seniors suffered a substantial loss against UTS in a result which further highlighted the massive inequities in the First Division competition.
The Rams were playing against a club which is able to draw from a considerably stronger player base so it was a matter of battling their hardest against the odds - which, to their credit, they did well (which is the trademark of the Penrith club).
Whilst the outer western clubs have to participate in such an inequitable competition, senior football out here will never develop properly nor realize its full potential.
It is essential that the unique problems the game faces out here are recognized and appropriate resources allocated to enable the problems to be rectified before it is too late.
Final scores were: Opposition 19.15 (129) d Penrith 1.5 (11)
With the club already hit by a number of injuries, severely affecting its playing depth, Reserve Grade struggled for numbers but were still able to put together a full side. They were hopelessly outclassed, but saw the game out to the very end, showing considerable fortitude and class in doing so.
Matters were not helped by an attack on a Penrith player behind play, unnecessary at the best of times let alone when you are winning a game so easily.
Unfortunately the same club was involved in two other unsavoury incidents towards Penrith players when visiting Greygums Oval 18 months ago. It is an aspect of the game that urgently needs to be dealt with and stamped out by the authorities.
Final scores were: Opposition 28.20 (188) d Penrith 1.0 (6)
Senior coach Jason Bradley's match report follows:
In a match that was going to be difficult for us for a number of reasons, we did not help ourselves with the start that we gave the opposition. We have to realize that you cannot give any opposition a head start of 8 goals like we did on Saturday.
To everyoneâ™s credit after quarter time we started to work together and actually put some good passages of play together. We tackled hard and chased the opposition down. Our disposal let us down at times which only added to the pressure being put on our defence.
Mark Jackson, Lachlan Smith, Jay Edwards, David Cummings, John Keane & Jason Ware all had good games for us. We have to forget about that result for now and focus on our next match against Southern Sharks at Gwawley Park.
