The drive north became somewhat arduous for those that relied on a "whereis" directions sheet handed out at training during the week that took them via the scenic route to the outskirts of Newcastle, but the smarter ones relied on GPS units and Gregory's street directory to find their way to the picturesque Northcott Oval, San Remo, on the edge of Wyong Lakes. After a warm welcome by the host club, it was time for action with the twenty available players taking the field.
The first quarter saw Penrith play free running football as the game went from end to end but two late goals enabled the boys to go to the break with a 3.3 to 3.1 lead over the home side under the hot and energy-sapping Central Coast sunshine. The second quarter produced a good comeback by the committed Magpies as they came back strongly with both teams scoring two goals apiece. Dark clouds quickly appeared during the half time break and as the teams commenced their third term a fierce thunderstorm with torrential rain hit the area. Handling errors were abundant in the conditions and the scoring suffered with the two teams managing just a couple of points each. As stumps were about to be pulled at the three quarter break, blue skies appeared once again and the match was on again. The final quarter saw the rigorous pre-season training sessions conducted by the coaching staff pay dividents as a fitter Rams team took control and rattled up five unanswered goals to run away with an impressive victory.
Despite a few players suffering niggling injuries and the flu prior to the match, it was a good hitout. AFL newcomers Matt Reardon, Nathan Sajowitz and Hayden McTaggert were ultra impressive and it was hard to believe they were playing their first games. First season Rams, Harley Stibbard, Adam Sharp, Nic Edwards, Alex Bain, Seth Harmer and John Spicer all took to senior football with great enthusiasm whilst Swans Under 16's, Jack Ponton showed off his silky skills throughout. With a good mixture of youth and experience this year should provide a very competitive environment for the Rams.
