Last Thursday, Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres and Member for Heathcote Lee Evans announced AFL NSW/ACT will receive a $13,000 grant to improve club facilities at Club Waratah in Sutherland.
The funding to install roller shutters to secure is drawn from the Community Building Partnership Program run by the NSW Government and is the latest in a number of improvements to Waratah Park.
“This is exactly the kind of project that the Community Building Partnership Program can be used to achieve – it means the clubs that use Waratah Park can rest easy knowing their equipment and facilities are safe,” said Mr Ayres.
Club Waratah will be home to two of the Shire’s local junior and senior clubs, the Miranda Bombers and the Southern Power.
Member for Heathcote Lee Evans commended the efforts of AFL NSW/ACT as the driving force behind Club Waratah and said he was pleased the NSW Government could assist with this funding.
“Club Waratah represents the single biggest investment into infrastructure the AFL has made in the region with a strong local AFL community demanding the creation of a facility that promotes the best possible Australian Football experience,” Mr Evans said.
“This Community Building Partnership Grant announcement comes on the back of rising participation in the sport, and provides one of the finishing touches to a fantastic community facility,” Mr Evans said.
AFL NSW/ACT State Manager – Diversity, Partnerships and Major Projects, Joseph La Posta said completion of this facility is vital for the growth of the game within the region.
“Access to quality facilities within metropolitan Sydney is our code’s greatest strategic challenge so the completion of this amenities building with the support of both State and Local Government allows our community clubs to continue to prosper and grow in a competitive sporting landscape,” La Posta said.
“Providing a quality built environment goes a long way to ensuring that AFL remains a viable sporting option for new and existing players, volunteers and spectators of all ages and abilities within the Sutherland Shire.”
On completion Club Waratah will have the potential to host recreational AFL competitions, elite player programs and community club finals series’.
