It is shaping up to be a big year for the Western Magic's Women’s team in 2016, eyeing off another finals berth and possibly their first premiership.
Head Coach John Dimond provided his preview for the upcoming season: “With most of the 2015 team participating in sports over summer or working it was difficult to get more than half a dozen players to preseason training. One of positives is that a couple of new players turned up and did most of the preseason program.
With some of the girls gaining new employment, going F/T after study, taking on new commitments and medical reasons, the Magic have lost 10 of the 25 players who finished the season last year. To date they have managed to recruit 4 new players and are working to get more on board as the Magic head into the practice games.
The training sessions have been impressive during February as the girls have shown they have either maintained or improved their skill levels. The completion of drills is also at a higher level something that will help the Magic as we head into the season proper. IDimond liked to thank Jack and Ash from Div1 for including the women in the pre-training sessions, they are a lot of fun and more importantly reinforce the basic skills to the women.
First division this year will see 13 teams compete for the finals. There are 3 new teams and Wollongong has dropped back from premier division after having only 1 win in 2015. With 12 other teams to play it is shaping up as an exciting and challenging year.
