Sanders Medal Goes Down to the Wire

Penrith Rams Ben Mayer has claimed the ultimate prize in the Division Two competition, the Sanders Medal after a tight vote count.

The medal was not decided until the final round, where up to five players could have won the award. Mayer polled three votes in the final round against Camden to finish on two votes clear of Moorebank’s Shaun Wicken and three votes in front of Blacktown premiership captain Josh Mann.

To add weight to the win, 21 year old Mayer only played 12 games in 2015 but polled in seven of those including being adjudged best on ground in five of those games. He didn’t poll a vote until Round 8 but polled 10 votes in the next four rounds to put himself into contention. He starred in the final round win over Camden to propel the Rams into finals and grab the three votes and the medal.

Wicken led for most of the second half of the count however did not poll in the final two rounds to finish in second place on 15 votes. Mann finished in third place on 14 votes. Camden pair Josiah Ayling (13 votes) and Mark Maher (12 votes) rounded out the top five.
