Gun Macquarie University midfielder Amanda Farrugia has claimed the inaugural Mostyn Medal for the best and fairest player in the 2015 Women’s Division One competition.
The Macquarie University captain was on hand to accept the medal from AFL Commissioner Sam Mostyn despite getting married on Saturday after a standout year polling 27 votes to finish a whopping 11 votes clear of Western Wolves Lael Kassem at the top of the leaderboard.
Farrugia polled maximum votes in the opening round and led all the way to the finish to claim her first Mostyn Medal. Farrguia was the Women’s Division Two Best and Fairest medallist in 2013 to go along with a Grand Final best on ground medal and premiership medal from the same year and the Mostyn Medal is now another award she can add to her impressive footballing resume.
The pint sizes midfielder polled in 11 out of a possible 15 games and was the best player on the ground in 7 of those games. More impressive made by the fact that her side only won five games for the season. With four rounds remaining it looked like it was going to be a thrilling finish with Western Wolves Lael Kassem trailing by just two votes and last years winner Stephanie Walker a further vote behind however Farrugia would poll 10 votes in the final four games to score a runaway victory.
Kassem impressed in her first season in the top division after transferring from Auburn Giants this season to finished in second place on 16 votes with 2014 winner Walker and Newtown’s Codie Briggs (Deborah Roger’s Memorial Trophy winner for Best on Ground in Saturdays Grand Final) finishing in equal third place on 14 votes. Women’s Rising Star winner Nicola Barr from Sydney University finished fifth with 13 votes in a wonderful debut season.
