Balmain have captured the Division One premiership after defeating UTS by 16 points at Blacktown on Saturday.
It was a tight opening to the match with both sides kicking a goal early in the match. When the siren sounded for quarter time, the crowd knew this was going to be a tight one with the scores locked at 1.3 each.
The scond quarter was going to be important in the context of the match and it was Balmain who controlled it, with their forwards starting to dominate especially Aaron Cottrell and Chris Bolt, who was moved from centre half back to centre half forward. The Tigers kicked 3 goals to the Bats zero to go into the main break leading by 22 points.
The third quarter got underway and compared to the start of the match, this quarter was a shootout. Both sides traded goals with each other as the Bats attempted to close the margin while the Tigers looked to extend their lead. 5 goals to 4 in favour of Balmain stretched the margin to 33 points at the last change.
UTS needed to start well but it was Balmain with the first goal of the quarter to Travis Martin from the goal square. Halfway through the last quarter, a switch must have been flicked for the Bats as they started to close the margin getting it back to 15 points but they had left their charge too late as the final siren rang.
Balmain captain was looked lively up forward kicking three goals and being awarded the best on ground medal, with Chris Bolt and Aaron Cottrell, who also booted three first half goals, also playing a big part in the premiership win. For the Bats, Liam Flanagan was excellent throughout the game and was supported by Lucas Harry and Lachlan Lamont.
