The Sydney University Bombers have won back to back Women's Division One premiership after a 17 point victory against UNSW/ES at Blacktown on Saturday.
The Bombers lead at every break and despite being held goalless in the third quarter, ran out Premiers 5.7 to 2.8.
UNSW/ES controlled the early part of the match with three kicks for goal falling within a metre of the goal line. The Bombers then started to find their feet and would kick the first goal of the game coming from the boot of Aiofe McDonnell at the 7 minute mark. Five minutes later, Sydney University full forward Libby Sadler took a contested mark in the goal square to kick the second goal of the game. The Bombers took a 9 point lead into the quarter time break.
The start of the second quarter was a tight one again and it took 11 minutes to kick the first goal of the quarter through Hannah McIntosh of the Stingrays who closed the margin to 2 points. It was McIntosh again two minutes later who slotted a goal on the run to put the Stingrays in front. At the 20th minute mark, Sydney University hit the lead again through a goal to Stacey Lancaster. The Bombers went into halftime leading by 9 points.
The first goal after half time would be very important, however both sides were inaccurate with Sydney University kicking 5 points and UNSW/ES kicking 3 points. Sydney University would take an 11 point lead into the final change.
Like most of the game, the last quarter was a tough tussle with the game looking it could go anyway until Amy Foo put the ball through the big sticks for the Bombers to confirm the premiership.
Rachel Stack was excellent across half back all day and was awarded the Deborah Rogers Memorial trophy for Best on Ground with midfielder Jennifer Lew and full back Sera Kaukiono winning possessions all over the ground. For the Stingrays, midfielders Luiza Marzotto, Courtney Gum and Madelane Collier were brilliant all day.
